The heroic rescue of the crew of the sunken Helena is one of the great stories of WWII.
I’m glad to hear your FIL survived those ordeals. In my heart of hearts like so many of us, for the million plus that never made it home. I stand at attention and give them their due honor. One of total respect for serving their country in battle.
Being “buried . . . in a volcanic crater” conveys a sense of crass insensitivity. But is it not the case that an extinct volcanic crater in Hawaii is the site of a well-tended, duly honored and respected U. S. military cemetery?
Is this the crater named The Punchbowl?
I agree: the AP writer should know better. Indeed, the reference is to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific located at Punchbowl in Honolulu.
