I note that they are just about dead east of Sendai, but they apparently don’t want to say “Sendai” and “earthquake” in the same breath...

The tsunami will probably be fairly small this time. They really don't need another round of earthquake/tsunami events in that area.

I noticed that too.. for the recent M6.2 they list this town which is very close to Sendai, 222km (138mi) ESE of Ishinomaki, Japan.

As in the "Big One" of 1 year, 8 months ago, a first you don't hear much reports of damage or deaths in the first hour or so, but then it becomes gradually clearer and clearer. There are fisherman along the coast there that might have been swept out to sea for all I know. We won't know for awhile it seems. It does not help that sunset was over an hour ago. And of course it is below zero up there in most places. (centigrade, about 32 F). But it SURE shook down here and we are at least 250 miles away on and on and on.:
This shows the area where the biggest waves will hit. They would hit where the most damage occured on March 11, 2011:
I listen to local radios up there streaming and they are still repeating over and over for people to scramble up hills, to the tops of buildings, anyway high and away from the coast. They are naming public roads which are jammed with traffic, and telling people to abandon their cars in place and go on foot if they have to. This is terrible that it is in the dark. Naming off the various elementary and junior high schools to be used as evac center points. I am trying to see what the news is on the nuke plant front, as another nuke plant beside Fukushima is up there that may be affected, it is close to the epicenter (Aomori Prefecture) than Fukushima.

Thanks for the great update. Getting dark at your location and way past bed time here in San Diego. Hoping the best for all of you.

The USGS page just listed two more aftershocks, a 5.5 and 4.7. And on the map they look like a ‘swirl’. Maybe that had something to do with why it felt like it was ‘undulating in circles’? IDK, pretty weird looking on the map, check it out:

We are far enough to be out of danger, but close enough to be shaken enough and violently and not appreciate it one bit. I guess that is what I would say. Glad I am not up near the epicenter or in the red areas on the map I just posted. We are aways south of that.

I recall Ronin posting that the quake knocked his refrigerator over shortly after the 3/11/2011 quake. He posted that before we learned a tsunami was on the way.

First Tsunami hit was 1 meter high. Expect more waves.
To: justa-hairyape
How high was the tsunami last year?
To: jjsheridan5
Up to 40 meters according to wikipedia. Nothing serious yet. So far good news.
