When you go up against another group, whether in business or war, you need to know what the other group’s objectives are.
What do they really want?
In criminal law, this is called motive. If you understand the goal or the motive, then everything else will make sense.
What is Barack Obama’s ultimate goal in the fiscal cliff crisis?
Barack Obama has laid out several demands. He wants no spending cuts. He wants massive tax increases on the wealthy, which in liberal speak is anyone with a job.
But there is one goal he has that trumps them all.
What is it he really wants?

IMHO the Dems need to control the House in 2014 to complete control of gov except the SCOTUS. MSM already convince most Americans that the GOP will raise everyones taxes if they do not get taxcuts for the rich. Going over the cliff will support such narrative. If the GOP relents and accepts taxes for the rich but can get only promises of possible cuts in 2013, then it will ignite a civil war in the GOP as fiscal conservatives declare war on the moderate wing. Either way the GOP is screwed. Remember, Obama was raised in Asia. Americans play monopoly and Asians play Go. Both are strategic games, except Monopoly is simple and straight foward, while Go is balancing short term retreats with long term encirclement of opposnent. Obama has the MSM and most Americans’ ignorance of what is happening and using it to his advantage. IMHO, the GOP should tell the Dems to introduce a bill on what Obama wants, then votes present and let the Dem minority pass the bill and all GOP vote present. This way the moderate Dems will have to chose voting for tax increases and risk lose reelection in 2014. I think Sen Rand Paul strategy is the correct one. The GOP will need to explain the political ambush Obama/MSM had set up if they actually voted for tax increases or vote against tax increases to the GOP voters.

He wants the crash (”cliff”) to occur regardless.
He’ll take whatever Marxist policies the GOP will concede along the way, but he still wants the crash.
Exactly, Obama wants unlimited power for himself and unfortunately, he has the press and the American people on his side, plus the Senate.
The only thing that will provide any cover for the House Republicans is if they very publicly present the Senate with a balanced budget, that cuts mostly programs that benefit Obama supporters, and does not increases any taxes from what they are in 2012, and increases the AMT exemption and indexes it for inflation. This will put a lot of pressure on Red State Democrats in both houses.
But I’m living in a fantasy world in which the GOP has intelligence.

If this was simply ONLY obama’s goal, we could stop him in a New York minute. The problem is that it is the goal of whatever forces control him and they will not stand up and say it out loud.
I also do not think this is THE ultimate goal anyway.
I think THE ultimate goal, (and you can call me crazy, I’m used to it,) is to turn the entire US into a resort for the very wealthy elite from around the world.
This country is the only country on earth that has every natural topography known to man which some countries have only 1 or 2 of. We have lakes, forests, desert, grassy plains, mountains, rolling hills, tropical swamps, natural wonders, 3 ocean coastlines, winter, summer, spring, fall, rivers, streams, animal preserves, abundant wildlife, abundant and beautiful flora and fauna. In short, we have everything...all in one place. We have the cleanest air and water in the world even on private land, but the epa/fedgov takes more and more of it and makes our own land off limits or unusable to/by us. WHY?
And we have a population that is being dumbed down to serve. A service economy is not just a simple phrase anymore. The question is, who are we going to serve.

IMHO, this is a large part of why Jim DeMint chose to leave the Senate. He got sock and tired of the juvenile antics.
