The national political barometer has shifted to South Carolina as operatives speculate on who Gov. Nikki Haley will appoint to fulfill the unexpired term of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.
DeMint announced Thursday that he will resign effective Dec. 31 to lead the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.
Speculation immediately turned to U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, who represents the first congressional district, and other members of the South Carolina congressional delegation including Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-Spartanburg, and to place holders such as Henry McMaster and David Wilkins who could serve until voters selected a permenant replacement in 2014.
During a phone interview Thursday, Gowdy said he has not spoken to Haley regarding her selection, but he would urge her to appoint Scott or Rep. Mick Mulvaney.
It's her decision and hers alone. She has not called and asked my opinion and has no obligation whatsoever to do so, but if she did, the two names I would give her are Tim Scott and Mick Mulvaney, Gowdy said.
Both, he said, have previously expressed interest in the job and have deep, true conservative values.

Tim Scott would be an excellent pick.

I agree!
I love Trey Gowdy.
Trey’s got my vote.
It would never happen for a number of reasons, including that Sarah’s not a SC girl, but I’d love to see liberal heads explode as Gov. Nikki Haley appoints Gov. Sarah Palin as the new Senator from SC.

Daydreaming can be such a pleasure...and that might happen in another State sometime. Not here.
He talks like a down home guy but he is soooo smart.
Rep. Gowdy is an excellent Congressman and I’m glad he represents my district. However I get the feeling he too is “fed up” with Washington DC and wished to be back in Good Old SC for good. I hope we don’t get the usual GOP insider get the Senate seat...would love to see Tim Scott or Mick Mulvaney. Time will tell....But using my keep powers of deduction....I CAN tell you a name you can eliminate from the list of Republicans Jake Knotts. LOL
We should not get are hopes up that she will pick Tim Scott as a replacement because it is not going to happen.
All you need to do is look at her past endorsements...remember Mitt Romney?
She could erase a lot of her mistakes by nominating Tim and be a shoe in for reelection but she will opt to stick with the common thought that Conservatism has been relegated to the political wilderness.
No, not in SC. Yours is one of the relatively few states that, like Texas, has its own history and identity. Even most of those in SC who love Sarah don't want her representing their state in the Senate.
Tim Scott or Trey Gowdy would both be excellent choices. Too bad they can’t just dump Ms. Lindsay and put both of the in the Senate.
They’re always talking about how the Republican Party needs to try harder to win Hispanic voters. She could pick Mark Sanford—he could be helpful winning over Argentinian-Americans.
