Michigan Republicans draw union ire with sudden votes on right-to-work legislation

Michigan Republicans touched off a firestorm Thursday with an abrupt push to pass right-to-work legislation, in what would be a blow to organized labor in the home of the U.S. auto industry.

Right-to-work legislation prohibits unions from forcing workers to pay union dues. Unions and their Democratic allies adamantly oppose these laws -- but with little warning, Michigan Republicans on Thursday laid the groundwork to, in a matter of days, make their state the 24th with right-to-work legislation.

"This is all about taking care of the hard-working workers in Michigan, being pro-worker and giving them freedom to make choices," Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said. "The goal isn't to divide Michigan, it is to bring Michigan together."

The votes Thursday, though, drew hundreds of union-tied protesters to the capital, some of whom were pepper-sprayed by police when they tried to storm the Senate chamber.

Just hours after the bills were introduced, both Republican-controlled chambers approved measures prohibiting private unions from requiring dues. The Senate quickly followed by voting to impose the same requirement on most public unions.

Michigan requires five days to pass before the MI house and senate can reconcile and finally pass the bills (ie, next Tuesday). Expect an ugly five days with lots of arm twisting to try to prevent final passage.

Good, get it through before the unions could organize their thugs. They always look the same. I wonder if any of them even own a razor (including the women).

So, the unions are taking a hard stand against allowing people to chose their associations. I thought that the left was pro-choice. Their hard stance against choice is further proof that they are not for choice, instead they are pro-murder, period!

Someone is going to end up dead over this. The unions will not take this gently. Not in Michigan,

The unions have virtually no chance of winning this one and they know it. I'm rather astounded at the masterful performance of our republicans for once.

The unions did this to themselves. After both the big union proposals were crushed in the election, they immediately started harassing legislators to oppose RTW when nobody was even talking about it. Also there's a considerable number of conservative union conscripts these days who want out. Plus there are pro union RTW supporters who recognize that their unions have become nothing more than political organizations.

Job security comes from a profitable employer. A union never improves the bottom line. Way to go Michigan for giving your workers a choice!

Nice of the SEIU to put Obama right on their shirt to show where their loyalties lie.

"a blow to organized labor in the home of the U.S. auto industry."

The problem, of course, is that this home, along with most of the other homes in Michigan, is underwater. The problem is that labor expenses in Michigan are so high, BECAUSE of the labor policies there, that people (like me) are abandoning the state. This law is one glimmer of hope that this problem can be reversed.

“”Michigan Republicans draw union ire””

They do that just by existing, why is today any different.
