Walmart security shoots mother-of-2 shoplifting suspect dead in parking lot as she tries to flee

A 27-year-old mother of two has been fatally shot by an off-duty sheriff's deputy after he suspected her of shoplifting at a Houston Walmart.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies have said that victim Shelly Frey, Tisa Andrews and Yolanda Craig were stealing when they were confronted by Louis Campbell a 26-year veteran of the force who works as a security guard at the store.

According to Campbell the women ran to their car and when he rushed to open the door, they accelerated away - at which point he fired the deadly shot into the car which hit Frey in the neck.

** snip **

Tragically, Frey wasn't even supposed to be at a Walmart that evening.

Earlier in the year she pleaded guilty to stealing shirts and a package of meat from another Walmart and as part of her plea arrangement she agreed to never enter Walmart stores again.

We still need those videos. That the sheriff's spokesperson wasn't praising them is, off course, SUSPICIOUS!!!! Remember, the videos in Las Vegas where the three cops shot that shopper at Costco went missing for a very long time ~ which is always suspicious.

BTW, at the end of the year two of those cops got national awards for meritorious service ~ the third cop didn't ~ he was, as we all guessed, a very bad cop indeed ~ he bought a pistol for a convicted felon

We hanged horse thieves because it left a man stranded in life or death situation in remote areas with hostiles around

You cannot equate that with this

Right up there with "My Cousin Vinnie", although the tv version lost some humor, when all the profanity was removed and I'm no great fan of profanity.

Well, if you were a fan of movie profanity, I'd recommend "The Departed." Gangster movie set in Boston, with Jack Nicholson, Leonardo diCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, Martin Sheen and Alec Baldwin, directed by Scorsese. Just amazing Boston Irish cop cussing, and the acting wasn't half bad, either! (Four Academy Awards. Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Had to leave the movie theater last week when we went to see the movie, “Killing Them Softly”. I have never heard the kind of filth and volumn of filth. My wife and I had to leave. I do not recommend it.

And that's doubly so when the dude guns down someone in the back seat ~ where whatever it was they were doing they sure weren't operating the motor vehicle.

We pay top dollar taxes around here to train these guys to shoot the right people ~ performance is expected. What they do in Texas is anybody's business of course but in Virginia they generally need to be sure of their target!

Shooting through glass, particularly windshields (front or back) is no easy task; no matter how good your aim is. The curvature of the glass can make your target appear in a different location than it is. Shooting through the front windshield of a car with 9mm or .45, I've seen bullets routinely reflect down.

However, this is not always the case. There are many variables to consider - type of ammunition HP/FMJ, vehicle is stationary/moving, thickness of glass, age of vehicle, make/model of vehicle. There have been ad naseum studies over this and the best anyone can predict is once the bullet hits the glass deflection is unpredictable at best.

You can be the best shot at the range: known distance, unknown distance, moving target, stationary targets and proven yourself in high stress gunfights.....the truth is there are times to fire into a vehicle when your life or others' are in danger; however, you may not hit your intended target.

The bullet may deflect down into the dash, left into a passenger, up into the roof, right into another passenger. Or depending on caliber, the bullet may deflect completely off the glass and NOT penetrate (I've heard of .22LR doing this). Another common theme is the high amount of glass blown into the vehicle also causes injury as well.

As reckless as it sounds, a lot of times the only way to get a reckless person to stop in a vehicle (that is posing an immediate threat) is to shoot multiple times at the driver until they stop, or are killed - ie blow away enough glass that point of aim = point of impact.

No amount of training will change a bullet's ballistics when it hits a windshield.

Shoplift in Texas and assault a police officer? You are already on a bad road. Even stealing and assaulting a store clerk could lead to getting shot. Try running him over with a car and you and/or your accomplices will probably be shot.

BTW -

Texas § 9.41 and 9.42 mostly likely protect the officer given he was working on behalf of Wal Mart and protecting "his" property (ie property he had a a right to) and that the suspects used force against him while fleeing in commission of their crimes. And, that according to other sources, she tried to run him over in reverse.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Now Alaska is different ~ that's for sure.

At the same time we have plenty of folks in this neighborhood packing AUTOMATIC WEAPONS ~ they work for the embassies and other international organizations in the area.

Most of these third worlders laugh at our idea that semi-auto is good enough ~ they also grow up with their own personal RPG if they are part of an hereditary warrior group.

I didn't grow up around automatic weapons, but I did learn a lot about them in the service, so one of the last things I ever want to do is convince some guy who has one that he should fire in my general direction. You just don't want that ~ not ever. Actually, I don't want them firing in your general direction either.

They tend to knock a lot of other stuff loose so you have the rounds, the highspeed trash, splintered bullets, and noise.

Now, about the cop ~ we need the videos,

“I am disgusted at how little life is held as treasure these days. Do something people don’t like and you get the thumbs down in the Arena.”

Yeah ,I don’t like the thievery, but dying for your actions here is way over the top. Still, there isn’t often a day here on FR when some “person of color” doesn’t end up like this. Seems like the gene pool would be thinning out, and/or the remaining “folks” would start to get the message that the rest of us are fed up with their act.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I'm no fan of it, either. But in "The Departed", it really was kind of funny out of the mouths of law enforcement.

FYI, according to Human Events magazine, “Killing Them Softly" Puts the Blame on Bush.

Interesting thing about windows is that as cars have been made lighter and lighter windshields and deck windows have become stronger and stronger.

Back in 1997 I bought a couple of Elantras. One nice feature they had was a titanium system placed in and around the passenger compartment that would hold up in a rollover.

Another feature came with the windshield. It was glued onto the frame with a sort of super glue. It was specially hardened so it actually contributed to the roll-bar/titanium box structure ~ the windshield would not break in a rollover.

One day one of the boys managed to roll one of the cars. When it came to a stop upside down he turned off the engine, opened the door and stepped out. He called the cops to report the accident. They sent an ambulance looking for a body.

I replaced that with another Hyundai Elantra ~ brand new ~ kept it 15 years.

Finally tried hitting that windshield with a hammer ~ it didn't break!

Makes me wonder how those windows stand up against bullets ~

To which "real" guns to you refer? And as for open carry - I'm all for it. Personally I'd still carry concealed, because I'd rather the presence of my handgun be a sudden, surprising, unpleasant revelation to the bad guys.

I don't disagree.

My point is very often cops, firing in extremely stressful situations, blindly fire and spray bullets all over until they empty their piece. Many of us would do so if caught quickly in dangerous situations. However, in those types of situations the cops are the paid professionals, so they need to act like it and be treated by their departments as such.

Cops should have a lot more training than they get, both range training and stress training, and also be psychologically screened to weed out the intemperate and immature. Also—completely ban steroids for cops, which often leads to blind rage.

And police unions should be banned as well. Every time something like this happens and the union steps in to keep the cop on the force, the union should be sued for everything they have by the victims' families, especially where innocents are hit.

Hit it in the very corner. You can hit car windows (even door windows) with a hammer, tire iron, gun, etc dead center and it won't even crack. It is pretty funny watching someone in training do this with a [unloaded] pistol for the first time.

But, if you hit it in a corner it will give. Another fun thing to try if you ever decide to start a new profession as a car thief - walk up to a car and snap off the radio antenna and smack the back lower corner of a door window......instant access.

Try this guy’s method to break windows. It’s foolproof.
