WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama met with Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner on Sunday at the White House to negotiate ways to avoid the "fiscal cliff," according to White House officials and a congressional aide.
The two sides declined to provide further details about the unannounced meeting. Obama and Boehner aides used the same language to describe it.
"This afternoon, the president and Speaker Boehner met at the White House to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
"We're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open," he said.
An aide to Boehner emailed an identical quote.

You have to understand Community Destroyer’s thinking. He wins either way.
If things go well, he gets the credit.
If things don’t go well, he gets what he originally wanted which is to take down America a notch or two.
This is why you don’t want a foreigner as president. He’s not invested in things going well for us.

The only question worth asking is: Does Boehner want to be known as a Speaker worth a tinker’s d*mn or not? My prediction is...not.
Inquiring minds want to know if Boehner wore his Neville Chamberlain mask.
Boner’s legacy is screwed.
So essentially, the other side was negotiating with itself and our side wasn’t at the table.
If you would have substituted the name Nancy Pelosi for John Boehner, I wouldn’t imagine a different outcome.
Obama laid out the 7,000 page dossier the CIA put together on Boehner’s personal life and finances, after which Boehner said “I think we can work something out”.
