Is the economy creating a lost generation?
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday, December 9, 2012 | Robert Samuelson

This is not a good time to be starting out in life. Jobs are scarce, and those that exist often pay unexpectedly low wages. Beginning a family — always stressful and uncertain — is increasingly a stretch. The weak economy begets weak family formation. We instinctively know this; several new studies now deepen our understanding.

When the labor market operates smoothly, it creates an economic escalator. Just out of high school or college, young workers typically switch jobs frequently until they find something that fits their talent and temperament. Job changes often mean higher pay; people move to advance themselves. The more they succeed, the more confident they feel in marrying and having children.

The most startling evidence of the broken escalator is the collapse in marriages and births. Marriage has been declining for years. Now, in a new study, the Pew Research Center finds that in 2011 the U.S. birth rate (births per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44) fell to its lowest level since at least 1920, the earliest year of reliable statistics. From 2007 to 2011, the U.S. birth rate dropped almost 9 percent. The total fertility rate — the estimated number of children born to adult women in their lifetime — has fallen four straight years to 1.9 (the replacement rate is 2.1).

I as their grandmother understand both sides. Your arguement and theirs. It is not my decision, I will not have to raise the children, I will not be here to help protect them against all the EVIL that they are going to face.

You are correct in saying that we need more Conservative's to be born. We need more Christian families to produce. That is not happening or going to happen.

That leaves only the 47%er's who ARE producing add that to the Illegals. THERE IS no hope for a Conservative future, that is a fact.

May God have Mercy on the last 47%'er that is left to pick up the TAB, that is when they will discover the errors of their procreating ways, but by then it will be 75 to 90%. No one left to pay the bill for them. Too bad & so sad.

Can we say then "Forgive them THEY known not what they did", but OH, they did know. I wish it were not SO, but it is just the writing on the wall.

What we have now we expected at least 20 years ago and it has only been delayed by conservatives fighting but it has only been a delay!"""""......

I think you are right about that, 20 years ago. I just did not think it would get this bad at that time.

It has been a series of gradual happening's. From Hollywood, Music and Congressional Legislation that has deterioated America's culture as we desire it.

For Christian Conservatives to continue to have children, is nothing more that having them produce more children to feed to the LIONS. Work/slave for us OR ELSE.

It is said that G.d, knows who the very last person that will accept HIS SON, and HE is not willing that any shall perish. Perhaps we are seeing this in the making at this very time. This is the first time I have thought about what that message may mean, but possible.

Yes. By design.

Ubama and his fellow travelers want to destroy America.

America is the only thing standing in the way of their totalitarian socialist utopia.

In many ways they are. As we continue to birth control and abort our way out of a future, somebody has to pay for the future.

Immigrants doing the procreating that Americans will not do!

The real problem is that people value their Starbucks $4 coffees, new cars, expensive vacations and 4,000 and 5,000 Sq FT homes than they value the idea of children. Children, for most Americans are simply another chic accessory, right along with their ‘Christian’ faith. A faith that universally rejected birth control until the 1930’s.

Now even some main line Protestant religions are ‘OK’, if not promoting birth control, the ‘Morning After’ pill, and in many instances, abortion on demand & euthanasia.

What has this lead to? A significantly coarser, more Leftist, sexually permissive, & morally bankrupt society that believes their own convenience is more important than another persons life.

I am not saying that my family is any better. I am the second of six, my wife is the youngest of seven. On her side of the family only one of her siblings has more than two children. She has a brother with three. On my side I have one sister who has four children, we have four, only 3 at home (our second born, Douglas, died in 2010 at 25 months old) and would be glad to have more, but we married late in life & age is more than creeping up on us. Besides that every other sibling has two children. My one brother has been married for eight years since he was 22 and has no children and my youngest brother is getting married in July.
