THAT'S how you get people to do as they're told ... it's impossible for them to learn otherwise.

You don’t have to read to be able to swipe an EBT card.

Maybe if they spent a few more millions of dollars the kids in Detroit would be able to read better. Isn’t this the way it works?

I suspect that my rural public school was closer to 98% back in the early 80s.
I grew up in Boyne City back in the 50's and 60's and I can't see any the teachers back then as anything other than teachers. They taught, we listened and we learned. Many of us didn't go on to college but it wasn't because we weren't prepared.
I can still remember a few of the teachers's names because they were tyrants........One being old "Granny" Davis whose hobby was probably diagramming sentences............

Maybe if they spent a few more millions of dollars the kids in Detroit would be able to read better. Isnt this the way it works? Pretty soon, the only things left to read in Detroit will say "closed", "condemned", "out of business", "do not enter"...

"Statewide in Michigan, only 32 percent of public-school eighth graders scored grade-level proficient or better in reading, and only 31 percent scored grade-level proficient or better in math" Time to lower the standards.

They don’t have to read. Obama will tell them everything they need to know on his website. (NOT sarcasm)

It'll never change until those proud parents are also held accountable.
The wifey is a teacher in our community, small school, 20 kids. Half White, half Indian; and parental involvement is critical for success. Our school has always made AYP; passed the benchmarks; even all the Indians are doing quite well. You can look at other schools within our district that are having problems with AYP; alcohol, drugs, parenting, and domestic issues affect the kids in so many negative ways.
State has really started paying attention to the parents last couple years with legal repercussions. Problem then becomes the parents pull their kids from school to avoid legal troubles over child abuse. They claim they are home schooling and the kids get no schooling.
I remember many years back when the wife taught at an urban school. Had a 2nd grader missing all kinds of school. Turned out the father was selling dope, had the kid delivering it on his bike, no joke. Child Services was too busy, didn't have enough resources to do anything. Wife called city police and they parked outside the kid's house, told the dad they weren't leaving until the boy was back in school; he was back in school the nx day and never missed again, true story.
