Rebel groups across Syria are defying the United States by pledging their allegiance to a group that Washington will designate today a terrorist organization for its alleged links to al-Qaeda.
A total of 29 opposition groups, including fighting "brigades" and civilian committees, have signed a petition calling for mass demonstrations in support of Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist group which the White House believes is an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq.
The petition is promoting the slogan "No to American intervention, for we are all Jabhat al-Nusra" and urges supporters to "raise the Jabhat al-Nusra flag" as a "thank you".
"These are the men for the people of Syria, these are the heroes who belong to us in religion, in blood and in revolution," read a statement widely circulated on Syrian opposition Facebook pages.
Jabhat al-Nusra made its mark early this year with a string of suicide bombings, a tactic it continues to use. Aided by fighters from abroad and Syrians who have returned from other wars in the Middle East, it has also led battles for a number of military bases and has secured a string of recent victories. Along with allied jihadist groups, it captured the Sheikh Suleiman base west of Aleppo yesterday morning, and has also dented the infrastructure of the regime in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Although Jabhat al-Nusra remains separate from the Free Syrian Army, many FSA leaders now recognise its strength and order their forces to cooperate with it.

...what the Hell happened to this country?
Who voted for this?
And how much more of it are we going to have to put up with before someone in a position to do something actually does something?
Gee (haad), let’s send them some F-16s.
Congress might wake up when Obama NUKES American cities
for his allies in al Qaeda. Probably not.
They are too busy engorging themselves with their greed.
I have an idea!
Let’s ship these friendly Freedom Fighters weapons from.... Libya! Yeah, that’s the ticket!
We helped the Qataris send in too many weapons to overthrow Ghaddafi, and it looks really bad that a bunch of those guys turned out to be Al Qaeda.
So now we help the Syrians with the guns by shipping them through Turkey!
What could possibly go wrong?
government uses Al Qaeda as a tool for power grabs, in US and middle east.
Way to go there, Bammy! Your feckless foreign policy is sure “paying dividends.”
Well, this is all so “unexpected”. /S
Gee, who would have thunk that fighting a war using the same insurgents and terrorists that fought US troops in Iraq, would have problems ?

Mr. Obama notably did not commit himself to providing arms to the rebels or to supporting them militarily with airstrikes or the establishment of a no-fly zone, a stance that has led to a rise of anti-American sentiment among many of the rebels.
That is the kind of half-step that has led to mounting frustration in Syria, peaking this week with the blacklisting of the Nusra Front. Far from isolating the group, interviews with Syrian rebels and activists show, it has for now appeared to do the opposite. It has united a broad spectrum of the opposition from Islamist fighters to liberal and nonviolent activists who fervently oppose them in anger and exasperation with the United States.
The widespread dissatisfaction among rebel groups and the broader population raises the possibility that now, just as the United States is stepping up efforts to steer the outcome in Syria, it may already be too late.
More than 100 antigovernment organizations and fighting battalions have called online for demonstrations on Friday under the slogan, No to American intervention we are all Jabhet al-Nusra, a reference to the Nusra Fronts Arabic name.
Anti-American sentiment is growing, because the Americans are messing up in bigger ways lately, said Nabil al-Amir, an official spokesman for the rebel military council for Damascus and its suburbs, one of the committees that the United States and its allies are trying to coax into a unified rebel command. With every step to correct earlier mistakes, he said, they make a bigger mess.
IMHO - This also explains why Panetta recently said he has seen no movement on WMD. Why on Earth would anyone ever say that in this situation ? Is he on drugs ?
Let me get this straight - we, out of all the nations in the world, owe them. And if we don't help them kill Assad, they will stage terrorist attacks against us. You know - they're sounding more and more like the Palestinians. It's time to help Assad erase them from the face of this earth.
Not at all. How many guerrilla movements have threatened to attack us if we did not help them? Ultimately these subhuman scum need to be exterminated.
“IMHO - This also explains why Panetta recently said he has seen no movement on WMD. Why on Earth would anyone ever say that in this situation ? Is he on drugs”
Let us not forget that shortly after Benghazi, Panetta came out in some presser without warning saying that they had lost track f Syria’s WMDS!! Now he has ‘found’ them..thinks Assad will use them, then says maybe he won’t after all...now today says there has been no ‘movement’.
Meanwhile..we see videos of the jihadist terrorists (that Obama is arming) and the murderers of our ambassador and navy seals, killing rabbits with WMDS.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!
These evil people running this country are going to get us all killed!!
Thanks for reminder. I had completely forgotten about that. Good memory!
