Have you ever read anything from John Holt, John Taylor Gatto or Charlotte Thompson Iserbyt? If not, perhaps by reading them you will begin to get an understanding of the philosophy of many of us homeschoolers. Forced schooling has no place in a free society. You can’t fix public education because it operates EXACTLY they way the designers intended, to destroy independent thought.
Ah, yes, you *are* much more holy than I! Now, do you consider, now that my children have been successfully launched, my working as a substitute and as a tutor in the schools enough to redeem myself? Must also I get my certification (as has been suggested by more than one administrative type) and serve the system to which I am so opposed?
Unfortunately, I don't think I can. I love the students, I love most of the teachers, and I really love to teach. Sadly, I don't think what we do in our bloated, bureaucratic monstrosity of a educational system is good for children or for teachers. I will quote a teacher friend of mine from a comment he made on one of my Facebook posts. "...now education exists so that the students have a system to serve and tests to take." And my sister-in-law told me once that she was very offended at my view of the system she gave her life's work to serve. I want to help students learn how to learn and love learning. The system is just not set up that way and don't want to serve it. I will just do what I can help students and help teachers.

There is no such thing as "forced" schooling!
You are free to send your children to any school that you like, Public, Private, Parochial, charter, magnet, or even homeschool. Your position has lost quite a bit of credence.
so if we sent them to private school, we get our tax dollars back?
Dang! Now you tell me! (Slapping my forehead in chagrin!) And to think of all those hours I spent getting my kids tested, putting together portfolios, and sending test scores and evaluations to the county! I could have just been minding my own business, enjoying learning with my kids and would have never had to worry about the truant officer showing up on my doorstep!
Next you will be telling me that I am not forced to *pay* for government schools!
“If only some had stayed and tried to fix it before it was completely broken.”
Disingenuous. As usual?
Right after I get mine back for the roads I don't use.
I agree most of the homeschoolers on these threads are very disingenuous.
That's a very good question...
You didn’t bother to answer my question, so I have to assume you have no interest in learning WHY so many of us homeschool. We all know you hate us, so do us a favor and leave us alone and we will do the same.
Instead of raising your voice you should reinforce your argument. To answer your question: Frankly I don't know why you have to do that I don't know which state you live in , and frankly I don';t care.
Don't lecture me about my credibility.Shouting does not improve your credibility. If you want to engage in reasonable dialog I am more than happy to oblige.
Your argument proves that there is forced schooling. You state I am free to send my child to any type of school, WHAT IF I BELIEVE IN UNSCHOOLING? WHOSE business is it what I do with my child's education? IT IS NOT YOUR BUSINESS!!
You are correct it is none of my business, but the citizens of your state, freely elected have decided that it is their business. You have three choices: 1) get elected and change the laws. 2) get someone elected that agrees with your point of view and have them change the laws. 3) Move to a state that has laws you can live with.
I should not have to tell any bureacrat how or if I am schooling my child, that fact that I do PROVES there is forced schooling.
Forced implies that you are limited to only one type of schooling if you choose to ignore the obvious choices that you do have that says a lot more about you than about me.
For the record i am in favor of what ever works for any child. For some it is public education, for others private, some homeschooling. I am in favor of all of the above and more, including vouchers. Now we both know that you owe me an apology, but given your attitude I am certain that you will give one.
To which the problems of basic dishonesty -- graft, theft, peculation -- should also be added. "Black" schools in Houston Independent School District ("I.S.D.", or "HISD" for shorter yet) have had a problem going back 15 years at least, with detected property conversions by unauthorized people (teachers from other schools and districts -- black, all of them I know about, f.y.i., have been videotaped doing this), who just walk in and cumshaw or "liberate" HISD property for their own or their school's or students' use.
There is an old Southern ethic of "toting privileges" that is possibly African in origin (since the custom is seen over in West Africa as well) and certainly cuts against English traditions of property ownership. If a family had two hams for Easter, say, and almost half of one was left after the feast sliced up on a tray as cold cuts, some or all of that ham might be expected to go home with the housekeeper for her family, under her "toting privileges". But it always applied only to de minimis takings, and under Jim Crow, the householder had strong and even excessive remedies for abuse. Now, not so much -- and so we see now "reparations" being extracted by violence.
The petty theft seen in HISD security tapes could be an extension of "toting privileges" or a version of military cumshaw or "informal requisition" practices. (Can't think of that Army slang synonym just now.)
Oh, really? And what will you say when Arne Duncan has finished forging Obama's "One Ring" to bind and compel all schools and "educators" everywhere, under his thumb? To teach his Communist orthodoxy to every child, and make every child a servant of Obama and the Party and its People's Republic?
"Credence"? You dispense that now, to free people? Really.

I’m still waiting for you to explain to this forum how a Christian parent who somehow manages to get elected to the local school board, would go about getting the Bible into every public school classroom in their school district.
