Judge Dismisses Capt. Paul Fields' Case Against City Of Tulsa

TULSA, Oklahoma - A federal judge has ruled against Tulsa Police Captain Paul Fields and his law suit against the City of Tulsa.

He had sued the city after being disciplined for refusing to attend or order his officers to attend a law enforcement appreciation day event at a mosque.

Fields said following that order violated his religious rights.

The judge said Fields did not have to attend, but had the option to send others, so his religious rights were not violated.

The judge added, even if Fields had been ordered to go, he did not have to partake of the religious services being offered at the event.

Fields was suspended for 40 hours without pay for allegedly violating the department’s rule on being obedient and another 40 hours for purportedly violating a rule on conduct unbecoming an officer. He also was temporarily transferred from the Police Department’s Riverside Division to another patrol shift at the Mingo Valley Division.

Do you know why is this a federal, vice state case?

Fields had no problems when going to the law enforcement appreciation day was voluntary, even though there were going to be religious services and people talking about Islam at the event. But, when no one volunteered and it turned into an order, he said he refused, because it violated his religious beliefs. And he was punished.

His attorneys said, the very next day, the department made it voluntary again, so Fields was effectively singled out.

If it was “Islam Appreciation Day” I’d tell him to keep on a-suin’... but it ain’t. The idea looks like it is to sell the (largely-infidel) police force to Muslims, and they don’t have to bow down to Allah or any such thing. If I were a cop I wouldn’t be quailing at this.

Sounds like it was an appeal to Federal civil rights legislation.

There is a lot to this story apart from the lawsuit. Don’t need to worry about Tulsa.
