Michigan teachers union president urges governor to veto gun bill after Connecticut school shooting

DETROIT (WXYZ) - In a Friday afternoon statement, the president of Michigan’s largest teachers union, the MEA’s Steve Cook, urged Governor Rick Snyder to veto a gun billed passed overnight in the state legislature.

“Regardless of what the details and facts are of today's events in Connecticut, this nation must have a real conversation about guns and the safety of our students and those who care for them,” Cook wrote.

The union president offered the condolences of the Michigan Education Association’s members and said, “I am a gun owner and avid outdoorsman, but something must be done to protect our children from such acts of violence.”

In the early hours of Friday morning, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill allowing people who undergo extra training to carry concealed weapons in places such as schools and churches where they previously were off-limits.

In his statement, union president Cook said, “Those who think that students and teachers will be safer with MORE guns in our schools are just plain wrong. Thinking that teachers should carry weapons and fire on threats is a recipe for even more death -- not safety,” he said.

“I hope Governor Snyder understands this and vetoes SB 59, not only for the safety of our children but out of respect for those who died today in Connecticut,” Cook said Friday.

The Republican-controlled House approved the bill early Friday morning after it cleared the Senate on Thursday. It now goes to Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature.

Another provision would eliminate county concealed weapons licensing boards, with sheriffs taking over their duties.

Under the bill, people who carry concealed weapons in gun-free zones would have to get enhanced training beyond basic requirements and spend additional time at the gun range. "Open carry" in those areas would be prohibited.

Decisions on licenses would have to be made within 45 days after an application is filed.

What happened today is more reason to pass the gun bill.

Let union teaches remain defenseless.

They can pay armed non union teachers for protection.

Interesting logic. Would he recommend a veto of 0bamacare after hearing about a child who died as a result of socialized medicine?

If my child had died, I doubt I would feel he was respected due to a politician vetoing a bill.

Exactly. If schools were required to have somebody who knows how to use a gun and has one available, they could potentially save more students’ lives than they save by knowing CPR or by having a defribrillator at the schools.

The no guns in school is a recent thing for no apparent reason. We brought guns to Michigan schools into the 80s for hunting before and after school.

Michigan doesn’t have a history of mass school shootings and we’re a gun heavy state.

It only took 30 seconds for the screaming gun-grabbers to take to the streets after this nutcase goes on a rampage in CT.
Certainly it is a tragedy. It should never be the children. No parent should ever have to bury a child.
But, the guns are not the culprit here. The culprit took the coward’s way out. And, we’ll be bombarded with psycho-babble profiles and self-righteous libtard outrage for weeks, along with calls to outlaw the only tools that MAY preserve this grand experiment.
Better we should home school whenever possible; and, secure the schools when it’s not.
This is a far different world than the one in which I grew up. It is a world that calls for constant vigilance, and constant preparedness.

Lets have a conversation on How every one of these killers
were mentaly Ill!! and how the mental health world shields them, and blocks the actions needed to stop them.

These Deaths are directly caused by Liberals.

These so called “Gun Free Zones” are a Joke....

Well the gun-free zone certainly helped the victims today, didn’t it? No, of course it didn’t.
Why? Because...
A gun-free zone is a murder-zone.
It’s an area where someone will be free to kill as many people as they can without fear of retaliation for a good 10 minutes or so, maybe more.
They only thing that stops the deadly force of a bad person is the deadly force of a good person.

The gunman went into that school building knowing he was the only one who would be armed. One has to wonder if he’d have so brazenly gone in not knowing everyone else was unarmed. One suspects there have been more shooting in schools than in say, police precincts.

“I am a gun owner and avid outdoorsman, but something must be done to protect our children from such acts of violence.”

One of the local talking heads was trying to take this stance today, pointing out how much he supports the 2nd Amendment, etc, ad nauseum & that we shouldn't jump to conclusions - and then he did exactly that 2 minutes later. I didn't bother to call in since he's just plays at being conservative, but I was disgusted (much like Lou Dobbs tonight) that the libtards instantly started their caterwauling. ((Not to say it wasn't coming, but within an hour of this happening - absolutely appalling.))

Pretty much the basis of every useful idiot’s “thinking.”

Nope, not a joke. A designed set up for what we saw today for one purpose: control.

You can have two people armed in every shcool, and if they don’t mind getting shot and wounded and sent to prison, they will still get in and due harm, but it will be less often because mostly these people are cowards.

What we have to do, is stop making out these people as victims of some sort of mental health problem or an abusive this-or-that......they are worthless murdering cowards who deserve only to be beat to a pulp and thrown on the road to be runover till there ain’t even a stain. We do that and these nut cases won’t go into it thinking they will be folk heroes or media stars.

Michigan teachers union president urges governor to veto gun bill after Connecticut school shooting

No, moronic Michigan teachers. It was folks like you who made schools into free massacre zones. Instead, make it possible and well-publicized that teachers and administrators who are licensed to carry will be doing so at school and will be ready and willing to take out anyone who tries to Columbine the school. The kids today weren't murdered because someone had a gun. They were murdered because the guy with the gun knew he could kill them with impunity. If the first responder is not a hall or a room away but minutes away after more minutes have elapsed while people get enough presence of mind to call and even more minutes go by trying to determine just where the shooter is then the shooter will believe he will have all the time he needs to do a lot of damage. If he really believed he would get shot himself just carrying a gun into the place, he would recalculate his likelihood of success and look for a change of venue, such as a police station or shooting range--oh, wait. Probably neither of those two places.
