No worries. She’ll only be a placeholder until someone from the next generation of Kennedy sub-mediocrity is ready to serve.
The President has not made a choice on his next nominee for Secretary of State yet, but Governor Deval Patrick is already making plans to fill presumptive SecState nominee John Kerry’s Senate seat. Knowledgeable sources tell me Governor Patrick has already had a discussion with one potential replacement for Senator Kerry: Vicki Kennedy. The sources say the governor talked to Kennedy, the widow of Senator Ted Kennedy, about the possibility of replacing Kerry in the Senate and that she did not rule it out. But don’t count on seeing another Senator Kennedy from Massachusetts any time soon: a source close to Vicki Kennedy says she would be unlikely to accept the appointment. But again, she has not ruled it out. If Kerry is nominated and confirmed as Secretary of State, Governor Patrick would appoint somebody to replace Kerry and, under Massachusetts law, a special election would be held no later than 160 days (and no earlier than 145 days) after Kerry leaves the Senate.
It’s a testament to how popular Scott Brown is, and how surprisingly thin the Democrats’ bench is in Massachusetts, that the party’s best bet to hold Kerry’s seat is a member of the royal family by marriage, not even by blood. It’d be a gesture towards honesty if Patrick went ahead and appointed “________ Kennedy” and then let the family fill in the blank.
Thank God the Constitution bans titles of nobility.
Or at least, it used too.

Some folks might be surprised that the Kennedy family doesn’t consider Vicki to be part of the ‘legend’. There’s a fair chance that while Vicki might be appointed to the spot...it’s only a four-month period then before an election would occur, and some would speculate that at least one other Kennedy (a pure Kennedy) would put their name onto the ballot, just out of dislike for the widow.
Vicki would have to spend money to defend her spot against the family, and then against some Republican candidate. She may realize that’s a tough episode to enter into. On the positive side....she’s buddy-buddy with the entire state Democratic Party leadership.

Yes, believing Kerry would be elected President with Romney as governor.
They repealed it right after Kennedy died with Patrick as governor, but not fast enough to prevent the Scott Brown special election.

I don’t care who one may be.
If you can’t beat someone who was exposed to be not only a liar, but someone who has been defrauding the people since her college days, isn’t a good test for your popularity.
That is why I was surprised the R’s put up McMahan’s wife again. She couldn’t beat a lying sack of $h-1 Poseur who has been enhancing his resume for years.
Sources tell ABC News that President Obama plans to nominate Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry for Secretary of State, ABC’s Jake Tapper reports. But Kerry isn’t the only Senator from the Bay State who stands to benefit from the appointment.
Sen. Scott Brown is widely expected to seek out his old job and he would be viewed as a strong contender, particularly in a special election to fill Kerry’s vacancy. Republicans have a tendency to perform better in special elections, which draw many fewer voters.
But it would be at least six months – assuming that Kerry is confirmed as Secretary of State, which he is expected to be- and assuming that Brown wins a special election – before he could re-join the Senate.
Massachusetts law dictates that a special election cannot take place sooner than 145 days from the time an out-going Congress member’s resignation is effective, meaning that at least 145 days must pass between the date that member actually leaves their job and the date that the special occurs. At this juncture in time, even if Kerry is nominated tomorrow and has an incredibly quick confirmation at the beginning of the next Congress, the earliest conceivable date to reach this mark is in June, 2013.
So Patrick is too racist to appoint himself...
I agree. Brown should have won. He was the incumbent and had the experience, he had the name recognition, he had the popularity, he had a spectacularly well funded campaign, he had every imaginable advantage, but he lost to a novice who never even sat on a City Counsel. I think Republicans are mistaken if they believe Brown can come back from that embarrassing defeat and win against a Kennedy in Massachusetts.
Yes. Deval can appoint someone to serve the 90 days until an election. I am surprised he won’t appoint himself.
He should appoint Kerry’s wife. She makes a much better lush.
