Australian politicians agree on gun laws

Both sides of Australian politics agree the US must consider legislating for tougher gun control following the massacre at a Connecticut school.

A gunman on Friday shot dead 20 small children and six teachers at the Newtown school, in one of the worst incidents of its kind in US history.

Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop told ABC TV she was sure US President Barack Obama, members of Congress and senators would want to debate the issue.

"There has to be an end to this kind of senseless killing," she said.

"I'm sure there will be a search for the cause, for the meaning and a debate will ensue in the United States about what they can do to stop this kind of tragedy occurring again."

Labor frontbencher Chris Bowen said he hoped Mr Obama would tighten gun laws now that he was into his second and final term.

"I certainly hope that America, as a society and under the leadership of the president, can tackle this issue," he told Sky News.

"You can't say there's no link between lax gun laws and these events occurring far too regularly, in my view."

Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer said a person was 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Australia.

The veteran National Party member supported the Howard government introducing tough gun control measures opposed by much of his party following the Port Arthur massacre in April 1996.

"Surely this time congress and the administration will stand up to the National Rifle Association and fix the broken US public policy settings on firearms," Mr Fischer told AAP.

Malcolm Turnbull tweeted his support for tougher gun control in the US.

"Listening to President Obama on #AM who could not weep with him and all Americans at yet another tragedy. When will America act on guns?" he wrote on the social media platform Twitter.

Greens leader Christine Milne said she was pleased to hear Mr Obama talking about taking meaningful action after the "devastating shooting".

"After Port Arthur massacre, gun control achieved because of tri-partite support. In USA the Republicans would need to support it. Hard to see," she tweeted.

I’m thinking the Nipponese must have been Creationists: They bombed Darwin in ‘42.

The NRA was quoting about 80 million gun owners in the early ‘90s. After Clinton’s Gun Salesman of the Year stint and 0bama eclipsing his sales record by an order of magnitude as well as population growth it’s not unreasonable to say that there must be about 110 million gun owners in the U.S. holding somewhere north of 400 million arms.

Our goal should be to double that. That should be the consequences of waging this war against us. Our goal should be 2-3 modern firearms for every man, woman, and child in America. I’m buying a new assault rifle for Christmas for myself and everyone else is getting NRA memberships. Ho Ho Ho

No offense, but while what you say is all well and good, but the fact is that the left IS takign away yours and our rights- trampling on yours and our constitutional rights, passing unconstitutional laws, (Hell, the supreme court even gave the left permission to pass uncosntitutional laws with John ‘traitor’ Roverts givign his assinien UNCONSTITUTIONAL reasons why he allowed the president to prevail in an UNCONSTITUTIONAL issue-) on and on it goes- little by little, almost imperceivably, one right after another is taken away, and I’ve not seen anyone taking a stand agaisnt it yet-

Thank you, sir.

As a vessel for these rights given by God, rights that no other foreign countryman on this earth has been blessed with, I believe that it is my duty to defend them with everything that I have, including my life.

Freedom is the name of the hill upon which I will fight. Let my conniving enemies meet me there if they have the guts.

Hand salute and a song that might be appropriate.

I didn't do what I did, give up what I gave up, lose what I lost, to have some punks tell me I can't own a chunk of steel.

None taken.

When the enemy takes my life, then he shall have taken my rights, and not until then.

They can only take what you give.

Pass laws, get court opinions, whatever.

If you hold your rights. And don't give, they can't take them.

They can kill you, but they probably won't eat you.

Best to man up and not let it ever go that far.

They’ll rethink those gun laws when more dingos eat their babbies! No kidding....feral animals breed like crazy in Australia...when enough of their sheep and children are attacked, they will rethink their gun laws

That was beautiful. Listening to that song brought tears to my eyes then down my face.

I thought it was the voice of angels, but then I realized that it is the voice of America. We must speak to those who think America turns on their whims with such a voice, and they will be powerless against it.

Our rights belong to We, the people. They were given to us by our Creator, God. They cannot be taken from us. We can only give them away.

I intend to give my rights back to God when I go Home, and I will thank Him for entrusting me with those rights. To anyone who thinks they will take them from me, I am going to give Hell.

the problem is that in the begiinning- all the peopel tryign ot hold onto their guns after the government makes guns illegal, will be single incidents, much like ruby ridge, or the koresh compund- - whiel htose were valient efforts to stand up agaisnt a tyranical government, they weren’t organized enough or didn’t have enough peopel stadnign with trhem to protect themselves adequately- I don’t forsee large numbers of folsk banding together to stand up for their rights- Soem will try, and be put down- but in the end, peopel for them sot part will simpyl hand over their guns- I see the left pushign this really hard- especially after the george zimmerman case too- and now this recent tragedy- exploiting people’s fears, , andl ike Sarah Barracuda said, I see the gop falling inline instep with the left on this-

We already see them caving left and right to the demands of the left- and I’ve said it right along, if dear leader got in for another 4 years we were goign to see unholy hell unleashed o nthsi coutnry- Hell, even the catholic church- whom dear leader repeatedly attacked durign hte first 4 years- supported dear leader i nthe end- apparently they love having hteir religious, and their constitutional freedoms stripped from them-

the evil one is gettign a foothold, one small step at a time- and I see thsi coutnry goign hte way of europe- who I imagien all thought “No way the government is goign to take THAT away from me-” Sure enough, the govertnment did, and little by little ensalved the whoel of europe much the way hitler did- only more subtly and over a logner period-

Dear leader immediately began tryign to have neighbor spy on neighbor and report any ‘suspicious activity’ through the govetrnment website hwne he first took office- 20 years ago even hte mere suggestion by as sittign president woudl have been met with furious outrage- but not any longer- suire, soem of us squaked about it, but it did no good- the mass majority of peopel simpyl do not care any longer- as logn as the governemt ‘gives them free stuff’-

This ocuntry is in a bad place, and I don’t think that there’s enough true patriotism to bring it back from the sewer the left has dragged us into.

Fox news shoudl be screamign about how dear leader cut the budget for school protection, and blamign hte president, and they shiould be doing htis day and night until the left rues the day they even usggested more guin control- but even fox news- our only real ‘hope’ these days, even they are too ‘politically corrwect’ to truly ruffle any feathers-

When I saw what supreme court ‘justice’ John Roberts did- I knew the end was near- When our constitution is so grossly neglected by even our own supreme court- aNd when we have the EU sendign folsk over to monitor our electiosn now- then you know soemthign bad has ghappened to the country-

It’s already goen htat far- and has so for a logn time now and not many ‘manned up’ and stood up agaisnt iot either- lots said they would, but not many truly did- those that did were called enemies of the state, and were murdered and noone gave a damn-

I cannot control what other people do. God gave them their rights just as he gave me my rights. What they do with those rights is their decision.

Do you see the single man in this picture? He is the very embodiment of courage and freedom. I only hope that I may be as brave as this man.

If the slithering snakes of America want my rights, then they will have to kill me, because I will never give the snake what God gave to me.

I would rather be off of this Earth than to live with that shame.
