Australian politicians agree on gun laws

Both sides of Australian politics agree the US must consider legislating for tougher gun control following the massacre at a Connecticut school.

A gunman on Friday shot dead 20 small children and six teachers at the Newtown school, in one of the worst incidents of its kind in US history.

Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop told ABC TV she was sure US President Barack Obama, members of Congress and senators would want to debate the issue.

"There has to be an end to this kind of senseless killing," she said.

"I'm sure there will be a search for the cause, for the meaning and a debate will ensue in the United States about what they can do to stop this kind of tragedy occurring again."

Labor frontbencher Chris Bowen said he hoped Mr Obama would tighten gun laws now that he was into his second and final term.

"I certainly hope that America, as a society and under the leadership of the president, can tackle this issue," he told Sky News.

"You can't say there's no link between lax gun laws and these events occurring far too regularly, in my view."

Former deputy prime minister Tim Fischer said a person was 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the USA than in Australia.

The veteran National Party member supported the Howard government introducing tough gun control measures opposed by much of his party following the Port Arthur massacre in April 1996.

"Surely this time congress and the administration will stand up to the National Rifle Association and fix the broken US public policy settings on firearms," Mr Fischer told AAP.

Malcolm Turnbull tweeted his support for tougher gun control in the US.

"Listening to President Obama on #AM who could not weep with him and all Americans at yet another tragedy. When will America act on guns?" he wrote on the social media platform Twitter.

Greens leader Christine Milne said she was pleased to hear Mr Obama talking about taking meaningful action after the "devastating shooting".

"After Port Arthur massacre, gun control achieved because of tri-partite support. In USA the Republicans would need to support it. Hard to see," she tweeted.

That was a nice comment, unlike some here, towards the Aussies on this board who support you guys here on FR and American conservatism unequivocally.

One shouldn’t take the opinions of a couple of pollies as being from all of us.

I am amazed how we can go from being brothers to foreigners in one statement. Please all of you grow up a bit and don’t stomp on the hands of those offered in friendship!

[[Looks like you have given in to fear and given up.]]

It does? Why? Where did I say that? I’m simpyl stating how I see the country headed- and how I see the4 supreme court headed- and how I see our government headed as they suspend many of our constitutional rights illegally-

That man was ground to dog meat not long after. And his side didn't win (yet).

I agree with you. I'd rather go like that, defending right, than live with what gets left after freedom is gone.

At least it's over.

Mel,

Please don’t take any harsh words personally.

People in this country are very sad at the murder of our babies, and at the same time the vultures of tyranny feed on their very flesh before their bodies were even gathered.

I’ve never seen anything so disgusting as that.

On top of it all, we have different areas of the world cheering the vultures on.

But we know that in all countries, including America and Australia, that those of us who would be free now face an avalanche of tyranny. In our anger and sadness, some of us including me have said things that we regret.

But we love you and we stand with you. Those men who have the balls to stand for freedom will know freedom, and cowards will know tyranny.

God Bless Australia, ally.

mel,

I truly love my Aussie friends. They aren’t real proud of some of your politicians or your government’s politics. I have known them for years.

I know one thing. If our American politicians were saying what these Australian leftists are saying, my Aussie pals would be saying a lot worse.

It seems that the Communist Chinese leaders are sending the same message as the Aussie politicians. That should give everyone something to think about.

I tried to be nice in my comments...because of my friends...but, they would support me in my comments. They love Australia as much as I love my country.

I didn’t intend to offend you and if I did, I apologize.

yeah, johnny, no doubt this man, who knew freedom even if just for the instant of this photograph in a country of people who do not know it, paid an awful price for it.

I know the tanks did not grind him over, but I suspect that may have been easier than what actually did happen to him.

But one of my favorite movies, a movie that I saw at a time that my political beliefs were forming, Braveheart taught me things that I hold dear to this day. I know it’s just a movie, but sources of freedom are rare these days, and one has to take them where one can get them.

“Every man dies. Not every man really lives.”

While my body and soul walk this earth, they are going to know and embody the freedom that God gave me and that other men who are braver than me fought for. I’ll not dishonor those heroes by giving away that freedom. If those men are the only ones to see my stand, then so be it.

I will stand in front of the avalanche of tyranny, even as a solitary man. And if that avalanche overruns me and kills me, then I lived my life as well as I could live it in an evil place.

But perhaps my Lord will give me His strength to split the avalanche around me and let it fall harmlessly to the side and then stop.

Either way, I am going to find out.

Australia will be invaded by China, and the Chinese will stop for nothing, they need expansion territories and they can tame the interior with water projects so a billion or two Chinese can live there.

But with an unarmed Australia there will be minimal resistance, and I mean very minimal, not even the best of all of the Australian military can cope head to head with China.

Now I happen to have some loyalty to OZ, and if I saw invading Chinese I would do whatever I could to create weapons of mass destruction, but of course it would be viewed as being illegal by Oz laws. They have condemned themselves. Its a bloody shame that the real patriots have to be an underground, always fearful of authorities seeking the guns, but also being patriotic to defend the land from invasion.

Oh yeah they are idiotic morons. They will surrender in a heartbeat. And the people of Oz will suffer for it, except for the gun owners underground.

Thanks for all your positive replies - it’s what I hoped for when I posted it. I just wanted you guys to know that there are people on this board who would stand shoulder to shoulder with you no matter what. When I post on this board I would not dare blame any single one of you for anything Obama or his minions nor do I use words that would malign the United States of America as I love her dearly. Criticize my country’s poloticians without mercy - fine by me - I will join you but I am as proud of my nation and it’s history as you are of yours and I do not like it’s name maligned by those I value highly.

Blessings

Mel

Thanks guys I reposted on the thread - thank you for your support.

You know guys I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye when I hear my national anthem but I will let you into a secret there are those of us scattered around the world who have the same reaction when we hear yours - except for when you are beating us a sport!

Blessings

Australia was founded as a British prison colony. Subservience to the government is in their DNA.

>>No, they won't<<

It's impossible to confiscate weapons from every city, every household in America.

What they can do, is re institute an assault weapons ban, ban mags holding more than 10 rnds, place cost prohibitive fees on weapons and ammunition, create a national registration for weapons and confiscate weapons situationally.

Anyone possessing a weapon on their list will soon not be able to take them out of their homes for fear of confiscation. Ammunition hoarding could become unlawful if over certain number.

Health and Human Services (HHS) could declare guns/ammunition as a human health hazard, thus putting into place restrictive regulation on possession. The EPA has already attempted to ban “lead” ammunition and I suspect they will not stop regulating. U.N. small arms ban still alive and well. Countries all around the globe chiming in to call for a ban on weapons in America.

This is a huge uphill battle folks. The assaults on our liberty and freedoms are ramping up.

Well Americans will simply “hide their guns”. I predict this will happen.

As I have said often, Americans will simply hide their guns and go online to buy guns and ammo. There are online businesses that do that.

Plus also any gun control laws will not survive a major court challenge.

I have a friend who moved to Australia- where she was born- just as the gun ban was being implemented.

She lives very rural and is terrified about roving gangs and other problems living so far out. She has solved part of the problem by having a pack of very loud dogs to alert her. She feels very vulnerable.

She raises horses, so she cannot just ‘move to town’.
