Egypt: A New Dark Age Begins
RSN ^ | Friday, 14 December 2012 09:09 | Robert Spencer

Eight people have been killed and hundreds wounded, but the latest bloody chapter in Egypt’s unhappy recent history is about to draw to a close: this Sunday a referendum will be held on the proposed new constitution, and that, presumably, will be the end of that. And what it will most likely herald is the end of the brief era of any meaningful voting in Egypt, and of any hope on the part of women and Egyptian Christians for equality of rights before the law.

Underlining the claim that to oppose their rule is to oppose Islam itself, the Muslim Brotherhood of President Mohammed Morsi will rally in favor of the constitution at a Cairo mosque near the presidential palace on the day of the vote. Liberals, secularists, and Christians will rally against the constitution on the same day in Tahrir Square.

They’re against it because, as the Associated Press reported, the draft constitution “largely reflects the conservative vision of the Islamists, with articles that rights activists, liberals and Christians fear will lead to restrictions on the rights of women and minorities and civil liberties in general.” They have every reason to fear, for the constitution reflects in numerous particulars Sharia restrictions on their rights. Unfortunately, it appears unlikely that their cause will succeed: the constitution is likely to go through, and with it will come Sharia and the dictatorial powers that Morsi recently claimed for himself and then renounced under pressure. …

Libya, Egypt, Syria, soon Jordan, Iran protected with delay until they have perfected nuclear weapons. Obama is creating the Greater Caliphate which will unite Islamists to attack Israel and then move on Europe and the rest of the West. Obama will be remembered as the greatest Muslim leader in a thousand years.

There goes tourism and probably the sites tourists travel to see. Islam is evil.

You could well be right. I always thought that our electing him, a mere 7 years after 9/11, was a tacit act of surrender on our part.

We visited there for a few weeks four years ago. The sites were wonderful and people we met were interesting. I am soooooooooooooo glad we went when we did. I wouldn’t step foot in that country now as the islamists raise their heads.

A huge amount. Tourism income in 2009 was 70 billion, in 2010 dropped to 17 billion. I was there from May 2011 to March 2012, and the downward slide was continuing.

I don’t know what it was like a few years ago, but even in the tourist areas the trash and litter is overwhelming.

I was in Egypt the last time 15 years ago. Late wife and I were visiting friends stationed at the Embassy in Cairo. We, and thousands of other tourists during that month, flew to Aswan, we boarded a “boatel, and cruised the Nile up to Luxor. There were big crowds of tourists at every stop along the way. This is going to be a blow to the Egyptian economy from which it may never recover. But that’s OK, because Uncle Sam will be there with pots of money to help out the good friends of our in Egypt.
