December 14 has come and gone—and President Obama’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act—better known as Obamacare—has received a stunning blow.

State governments had until December 14, 2012 to decide whether or not they would build their own health insurance exchange, an online service that would allow individuals to purchase private health insurance if it wasn’t provided for by their employees. That date has now passed, and the exchange has been rebuked by half the states—with 25 state governments refusing to participate in this critical component of Obamacare.

Their refusal won’t stop exchanges in their states. Under the law, states that don’t create the exchange can opt to have the federal government deal with this expensive task. …

I bet these same states will tell Obama to take a long walk off a short pier when he demand gun confiscation.

There are a few states that are a “hybrid” state/fed version which is essentially a Fed exchange.

This should be a boon for "Home Cure" Books, faith healers, survival books and such......

Good luck. Most Americans have no clue to survival under harsh conditions. It requires knowledge and applied experience which few of us have.

I may be better off than most but I am far from being completely self reliant - but - I have enough experience that if required I could quickly adapt.

GOVERNOR OPTS FOR STATE-BASED EXCHANGE

LEGISLATURE STILL MUST WEIGH IN ON HEALTH INSURANCE ISSUE

(BOISE) – Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter announced today that Idaho is opting for a state-based health insurance exchange under the terms of Obamacare, subject to legislative approval.

“This is not a battle of my choosing, but no one has fought harder against the mandates and overreaching federal authority of the Affordable Care Act. No one has more consistently and clearly demanded that Idaho retain the authority and flexibility to chart our own path forward. There was a judicial process for challenging Obamacare, and the presidential election was at least in part a referendum on its enactment. But despite our best efforts, the law remains in place, and almost certainly will for the foreseeable future. There will be a health insurance exchange in Idaho. The only question is who will build it.

Our options have come down to this: Do nothing and be at the federal government’s mercy in how that exchange is designed and run, or take a seat at the table and play the cards we’ve been dealt. I cannot willingly surrender a role for Idaho in determining the impact on our own citizens and businesses.

“This decision does not signal support for the law or how it is being implemented. However, it does reflect my continued determination for Idaho to be actively engaged in making the best possible choices – to the degree we are allowed – in the interest of more accessible and affordable health care for our citizens.

“Obamacare is not the answer. In fact, it very likely will do little or nothing to reduce costs while force-feeding us coverage and increasing the size and scope of government. But it is an unfortunate and unwelcome reality, and it would be irresponsible of me to simply abandon the field to federal bureaucrats. In the face of uncertainty we must assert our independence and our commitment to self-determination while fulfilling our responsibility to the rule of law.

The real experiment will be watching the bankrupt blue states run the state exchanges. Taxes will mount and businesses will fold or leave.

MI: Gov. Snyder has filed an application for a grant to establish a "partnership" Exchange. We are, however, leaving Michigan's "undecided" status unchanged because according to the governor's press release, he says the state may yet consider its own exchange and "has not yet filed a declaration letter formally choosing Michigan's path." Office of Gov. Rick Snyder, Press Release, Michigan moves toward state-federal partnership health exchange, leaves door open for MI Health Marketplace
(11/16/2012)

Update 12/17/2012: As Michigan did not notify HHS of any intention to establish a state exchange, they are expected to have a federal "partnership" exchange for 2014.
