I've been listening/reading for three days as people refer to the killer as "evil". The man was freaking insane. Severely mentally ill.

The evil in all this rests in the arrogance of doctors and government officials who think they know more about the brain than they do and think people like this killer can be medicated and managed in the general population. They and they alone have unleashed legions of time bombs on US. May they rot in hell.

You are correct. A study was done in our area and, not surprisingly, a high percentage of mentally ill people wind up being jailed because they end up committing crimes and being arrested. It is harder to commit a mentally ill person to an asylum than it is to arrest and jail the same person after they repeatedly cannot function in society. The activists who liberalized the mental health laws and released challenged people into society have contributed to many killings.

De-institutionalism in the 60’s was about MONEY...it was too expensive to keep people in insane asylums...there were motives of better care also, but as in all typical fed programs, its starts out with community mental health being 100% paid for by the feds...then every year it went down 10% until the 70’s when not much was left for “community mental health centers” and aftercare.

this of course, coupled with the ACLU demanding more and more relaxing of the mandates that tied the doctos hands as to how, when and why someone could be hospitalized.

I blame the govt who waste tax dollars on stupid projects and local taxpayors who don’t want to actually pay for mental health but squeal everytime somehting like this happens.

Couldn't have said it better if I'd tried! Bleeding heart liberals are ultimately responsible for letting these people mingle among us and letting the chips (or bodies in this case) fall where they may.

Murders committed by mentally ill could be double what official figures show

Snips from Mar 2010 article:

. Campaigners have called for authorities to stop playing down the scale of murders committed by mentally ill people as they claim official statistics do not record the true extent of the problem.

. Nearly 1 in 5 violent offenders in prison or jail or on probation were identified as mentally ill
