How Walmart Helped Make Newtown Shooter's AR-15 the Most Popular Assault Weapon in America
The Nation ^ | December 17, 2012 | George Zornick

When Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, December 14, inexplicably bent on ending as many lives as possible, he was carrying a Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle and several high-capacity magazines. Sadly, this isn’t the first time the country has had to deal with the aftermath of a horrific shooting spree, nor is it the first time we’ve encountered an AR-15 in this context: only days earlier, it was the weapon of choice for a shooting at an Oregon mall that killed two people. Five months earlier, it was used by James Holmes in an attack that wounded fifty-eight people and killed twelve in an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater. And several years before that, a man and his teenage accomplice used a Bushmaster AR-15 to terrorize the Washington, DC, area with a series of random shootings.

Although it is not yet clear where the Bushmaster AR-15 used by Lanza (and registered to his mother) was purchased, the model is familiar to many Walmart shoppers. It’s on sale at about 1,700 Walmart stores nationwide, though the retail chain pulled the weapon from its website early this afternoon. While last week’s deadly rampage in Connecticut has finally and unmistakably highlighted the madness of making these weapons so readily available, it’s a concern many people with a Walmart in their community have been trying to address for much longer.

Earlier this year, the Rev. Greg Brown had a troubling conversation with two members of his youth group from the northwest side of South Bend, Indiana...

They have some really sweet deals on AR-15 type rifles at our two Wal-Marts.

“The source” almost guarantees this becomes “conventional wisdom” in the MSM

Wally Whirled near here sells guns. Lots of Bitter Clingers around these’n here parts.

Shotguns, .22s, and a few low end bolt-actions up to 30-06.

Have never seen a Sporting Rifle in their line-up.

OTOH....Dunhams Sporting Goods sells several of them.

but that doesn’t do Walmart Bashers any good

I don’t usually buy my firearms or ammo at WalMart, but I think I’ll make a special trip, pick up some .308, and make sure they know they have my support. Then I’ll email the receipt to this loser at The Nation.

Marlin 336, IIRC..

Just bought a Western Field 30-30.

Marlin 336 with Montgomery Ward stamp. Almost pristine @ almost 50 years old.

New ones are being stamped out so fast the quality control is crap on them

Walmart was blackmailed into pulling shotguns and rifles here in NH after there was a shooting where the weapon was traced back to being sold at Walmart. It’s the Northeast, ya know.

I think there is one Walmart in Concord that just recently started selling shotguns again. The libs’ idea is that, if they can limit the sales to one Walmart in the state, they can prevent ‘gun violence’.

Liberals will reach for ANY target to blame so that they don't need to confront the source of evil...Jesus said it's out of our hearts that evil thoughts proceed...

Liberal theologians have long attempted to overthrow original sin...inherited sin passed down generation by generation...(Some cults like Mormons have joined in to militate vs. the doctrine of original sin)

Liberals will blame cultures and sub-cultures for certain sins...but to them, it's all the environment that is where evil is sourced.

They don't want to face the evil within, so they point fingers at their latest frenzy...whatever keeps the finger-pointing beyond looking inward...

why wasn’t this BUSH’s fault!??????

Oh - but it was. You see - the Bushmaster was named after George W. Bush's third cousin who founded Bushmaster back in the 1970's. Bushmaster then sold themselves to Cerebus Capital, where everyone knows that Dan Quayle is the chairman of the company's Global Investments division.

So - you see, it is Bush's fault, the whole family as well as Dan Quayle's!

Just as a point of reference, the Danbury Connecticut Walmart (closest to Newtown) doesn’t carry much of anything in the way of guns (must be very different from Walmarts in the heartland and south). Certainly no “assault rifles” to be found in the local store, nor even semi-automatic pistols. Maybe a .22 at most.

I’ll guess that most Walmarts in this area are like that.

I was in the same Dick’s Sporting Goods store that Adam Lanza visited in his failed attempt to buy a rifle, not many days before he was there. Not much in the way of firearms in that one, either.

Around here, if you want much in the way of firearms, you’re going to have to visit a dedicated gun shop or go to Cabella’s in East Hartford.

“I thought the AR was found in the school and the shotgun was found in the car?”

Yes. The “initial reports” were wrong, as usual.
