DES MOINES, Iowa Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie said it is time to start the discussion of outlawing private ownership of assault weapons and multiple-round ammunition clips.
City leaders say the Sandy Hook school shooting must signal a change in the country and in Des Moines.
In a rare move, the Des Moines City Council spent much of it's Monday night meeting discussing a national tragedy.
Cownie said he spent an hour on the phone with 100 frustrated mayors from across the country discussing how to prevent another senseless mass killing.
The mayors agreed on the need for better background checks for gun owners, tougher federal penalties for transporting illegal guns, and the outlawing of assault weapons and multiple ammunition clips like the ones used in the Sandy Hook shootings.
Cownie says the second amendment doesn't apply in this case.
"Certainly those are not for hunting, and I think we'd all be appalled if somebody went hunting deer with a 100-round magazine," he said.
A moment of silence was held for the victims of the Sandy Hook shootings.
Frank Cownie of Cownie Furs? Please show me where the Bill of Rights mentions hunting?
A candid discussion about the treatment of sociopaths is priority.
“tougher federal penalties for transporting illegal guns”
You mean like hiking them over the border to Mexico or something like that?
Exactly!!! It’s like these IDIOTS were reading from the same script! And why not say an actual PRAYER for the victims, instead of a “moment of silence”??? What’s up with THAT???
I think it’s high time we have a discussion concerning politicos who equate guns with evil intent.
And as an aside, lets also discuss a bankrupt media that grants instant notoriety and fame to any nut job that yearns to make a name for him or her self.
Each state already has the power to require that military grade weapons be stored in armories. It’s state matter, not a federal matter.
A community that decides that it wants the weapons in an armory, has only to petition its state’s legislature for authority to do so.
Able-bodies owners of such weapons *are* subject to the state’s militia laws.
The “high capacity” “military grade” magazines could be required to be stored in armories.
Yet, it is a matter for each state and the people of the state, to decide what best suits them.
BTW, that includes the power of the state legislature to order the muster of all “inner-city kids” with weapons, for drill and inspection ... and in the event of their failing to comply, the state *does have the power* to enforce the law to store the weapons.
Militia laws vary some, state to state.
There is no need of “new gun-control laws.”
There *is* a need to return to weapons discipline, especially in areas where fathers have not been around to provide good instruction and pass along the respect for the duties and responsibilities involved.
***discussing how to prevent another senseless mass killing. ***
It is so simple! Arm the teachers and lock up the psychos with their ACLU attorneys, in the same cell, so far back they will have to pump in sunshine!
These Nazi gun grabbing mayors better hope that CW II does not happen. It won’t turn out well for them.
They’re exploiting the massacre to serve their supremely arrogant and punitive views on civilization. They can go # themselves.
“These Nazi gun grabbing mayors better hope that CW II does not happen”
I pray for it to happen everyday. There is no effing way we can co-exist with liberals. One side has to go in order to save the nation.
This is good. His will be the first name that comes to mind when aassigning culpability after the next incident. I would appreciate the chance to explain why I was not armed in accordance with my training and preparation.
Or a candid discussion about term limits and ending retirement packages for politicians.
“Let`s ban guns.”
“Let`s not.”
End of discussion.
I honestly don’t understand these liberal’s calls for discussions. There is purely and simply no reason whatsoever to discuss the gun control issue with opponents to gun ownership. There’s nothing to discuss!
I think it’s high time we have a discussion concerning politicos who equate guns with evil intent.
And as an aside, lets also discuss a bankrupt media that grants instant notoriety and fame to any nut job that yearns to make a name for him or her self.
