PAUL: Rep. Tim Scott right pick for Senate

As he’s not only the first black senator from his state but the first from the South since the 19th century, Mr. Scott’s arrival will be a milestone for South Carolina and the nation. It also will be a milestone for the U.S. Senate, as Mr. Scott becomes the seventh black to serve in that body — four of whom were Republicans.

Still, Mr. Scott’s choice in becoming a Republican had less to do with race and more to do with his own upbringing. Raised by a single mother, Mr. Scott was like many young men — lost and struggling with his education and in life — until a Chick-fil-A franchise owner took an interest in him. It was this relationship that taught Mr. Scott the importance of individualism and conservative values, or, as he put it, “Coming from a single-parent household and almost flunking out of high school, my hope is I will take that experience and help people bring out the best that they can be.”

After barely making it through high school, Mr. Scott would go to college on a football scholarship, work as an insurance salesman and eventually become a U.S. congressman and, now, a senator.

I sent a message to Congressman Scott telling him I was proud to be his constituent soon (I'm in Mulvaney’s district—another good one).

When he gave Jesus top billing in his acceptance speech I said “Right on, TEA Party and a social conservative!—the “whole conservative” as it were.

Uh oh! He was helped by Chick-Fil-A! Liberal heads will spin twice!

Here's the best - and most revealing - part of Scott's connection to Chick-fil-A:
"His childhood mentor was local Chick-fil-A manager John Moniz, who asked him why he only purchased french fries for lunch. Scott told him it was because he couldn’t afford a sandwich, so Moniz would bring him sandwiches in exchange for lunch conversations."

Imagine that! A successful businessman takes an interest in a promising young man, and helps to feed him in exchange for what? The opportunity for regular conversations that might influence the course of his life. May God bless John Moniz for his selfless generosity and obedience to the teaching and command of his Savior. And may God continue to bless Chick-fil-A for the culture that encourages such a positive influence in the communities it serves so well.

A great choice by Governor Haley. Senator Scott, you have my prayers and my support!

While on vacation several years ago I attended a Tea Party rally in Georgetown, SC. At the time there were about six candidates running for the Republican nomination for congress. One of those six who spoke was Tim Scott. Even then he stood head and shoulders above the other candidates, even though they all were conservatives. Just listening to him speak I knew then he was destined to go far.
