ZAVALLA, TX (KTRE) - History Channel's Top Shot third-season winner, Dustin Ellermann, might be a master marksman, but in the wake of the Connecticut shooting that killed twenty-six people last week, he is also voicing his opinion on gun rights.
"It is wrong for the government to disarm you and make you a helpless victim where ever you are. Gun safe zones are stupid and foolish and there's some sort of illogical mindset that if we put up zones, that we are safe and that's not true," Ellermann said. "Bad guys are bad no matter what. If someone's bent on murder, he's going to do so and they pick the places where they can wreak the most havoc."
Earlier this week, President Barack Obama ordered his administration to come up with a new proposal to curb gun violence. Speaking at the White House, the President said it's time to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and that the massacre of little children was a wake up call to everyone.
"We won't prevent them all, but that can't be an excuse not to try. It won't be easy," President Obama said.
Gun sales spiked over the weekend as people rushed to get their hands on weapons. Ellermann believes it's because people are beginning to realize they have the ability to protect themselves with arms.
"You can't look for other people to be responsible for you and to keep you safe and to use common sense and situational awareness. That's every person's own responsibility," Ellermann said.
Right now, Texas law states anyone 21-years-old or over can obtain their Concealed Handgun License or purchase a handgun. 18-year-old's are allowed to purchase a rifle, which is a firearm with a longer barrel from a dealer or private seller.
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, whether he has a badge or not. Think of it this way...if a cop had stopped the murder would that have been awesome? Yeah, it would've been great. What if it had been an armed security guard? That would have been awesome, too. What if it was just a volunteer with a gun that heard the noise and stopped them short? That would be great. Why not a teacher?" Ellermann explained. "Why are we legislating and disarming the good guys and putting them in a criminal safe zone? It's just a criminal protection act is what a gun safe zone is."
Texas lawmakers are discussing new legislation to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons at school. Current law allows a school district to permit concealed handguns for specific personnel.
The "Protection of Texas Children Act," would permit schools to appoint a member of their faculty, who has had the proper training, to act as a school marshal. This act would also allow teachers to carry concealed weapons.
"I'm not saying arm everybody. I'm not saying mandatory security training for the teachers. But these teachers love their kids, they want to protect them," Ellermann said.
In 2011, there were more than 518,600 active concealed handgun licenses in the state.
This reporter must be assuming her audience is made up of two year olds...or Obama voters...
Man am I glad we have that cleared up for us. I’m sure that a lot you were also confused about the difference between a handgun and a rifle. I guess we should contact and thank the reporter for giving us that little tid bit of info. We are SO dumb. LOL!
Helping keep mankind warm for 65 years.
Good point!

Let Freedom Ring,
Most Zero voters probably don't know a hammer from a screw driver, so I see no problem with basic definitions.
Mostly, these monographs are aimed at the non knowing, hoping to persuade.
Those who already know what is, they don't have to read this stuff to get any more info than what they already carry around between the ears.
Outstanding comments by the ‘top shot’. We all need to stress the point, wherever and whenever we can, and get people to really think, not just drool along with the herd.
Oh, they know what a gun is big time, Memphis is the crime capitol of TN and most of it is guns and black on black crime.
Yet all the city wants to hire are black LEO, other races are not wanted, nor are residents out side of the city, not even in the same county. Gives them a very small pool to choose from.
“Bad guys are bad no matter what. If someone’s bent on murder, he’s going to do so and they pick the places where they can wreak the most havoc.”
What a true statement. Fence Post KILL TO, just ask my 16 year old son who is in a cold grave because some socio path wanted to see what it felt like to kill, and chose my child as his victim. I don’t see a call to ban hands, feet, screwdrivers, knives, cars, poisons, or any number of ways to kill.
I CCW to protect myself from the RELEASED killer of my son who made threats to kill any one who testified against him...well I spent 14.5 years keeping his butt in prison, I made him serve all but 6 months of his 20 year horrible plea bargain. They counted the 2 years it took to get him tried as part of his sentence, and tried to parole him 10 MONTHS later.
That is the population that needs to be reached, and educated, regards the ability to self defend, and other benefits of responsible gun ownership, vs the daily spew from the media regards the eeeevvviill man killers.
Fact is, every study shows correlation between the presence of guns, and enhanced safety of the local population. Need to keep plugging, sharing the info, deluge if you will, like the dbm, but showing the other side, the correct, side, the logical side, the factual side.
This gun legislation will pass the Texas Legislature since Republicans control the house and senate and that means MORE GUNS IN SCHOOLS.
Why is it Texas sees the true facts and many other states can't see the correlation between good guys with guns and killers with guns. Take the good guy's guns away and leave an open field for killers with guns. Why is that so hard to grasp?
I'm glad I'm in Texas and WE WANT MORE GUNS in schools to kill people who want to kill our kids. GOD BLESS TEXAS WITH GUNS!
City folk need some things explained go em.
bkmk
The reason the Founding Fathers fixed it so we wouldn’t be sitting ducks for tyrants (think of the Jews during the Holocaust) was sound judgment. If we allow Obama to throw a hissy fit and confiscate weapons; we’re ignorant. (Good law abiding Germans did that; and Hitler sent their kids out of country with guns to fight for him, while no one, especially Jews, had any means of defense.)
That is exactly what "we" are going to allow to happen, my FRiend. Not us, per sae, but the majority of the idiots who voted for obama.
Before Church services last Sunday, I made known my opinion of obama, I did not realize[ nor did I care]that an obama worshipper was listening. Boy did he fly hot.
Shotguns are also considered “long guns” on the 4473.
The author must have assumed that only rifles are ‘long-guns’. Next thing will be that they will describe long guns as pistols with “really really long barrels”.
We’ve got a lot of educating ahead of us. Starting with the low-knowledge “reporters” and “news-readers”.
God bless Texas. I have met a lot of Texans in my life, but so far, have never met a Texan I didn’t like, and I like their attitude.
If Missouri ever gets Kaliforniated, Texas just might be the place to escape to. LOL.
You know what? I am getting really tired of this crap. I say it is time to take to the whoosies. I demand that our Politicians quit putting our children in danger by passing “gun free zone” type laws which make our children sitting ducks.
It is time that we had laws demanding that every school have appropriate security which includes armed securtiy guards, and/or other designated individuals that the local school board selects.
The principal at this school was brave - she rushed an armed gunman. Just think what she could have done if she had had the training and was packing.
I demand that schools be allowed to have the constitutional right to self defense. These gun free zone laws need to be challenged, and the politicians need to have lots of people in their face to demand the right of self defense be returned to the schools.
Texas is stepping up, already have a bill to go as soon as the legislature meets next year - provides for school personnel to carry and other stuff. Main thing is, it won’t be a gun safe zone - good guys will be armed.
