History Channel's 'Top Shot' Winner Gives his Views on Gun Control

ZAVALLA, TX (KTRE) - History Channel's Top Shot third-season winner, Dustin Ellermann, might be a master marksman, but in the wake of the Connecticut shooting that killed twenty-six people last week, he is also voicing his opinion on gun rights.

"It is wrong for the government to disarm you and make you a helpless victim where ever you are. Gun safe zones are stupid and foolish and there's some sort of illogical mindset that if we put up zones, that we are safe and that's not true," Ellermann said. "Bad guys are bad no matter what. If someone's bent on murder, he's going to do so and they pick the places where they can wreak the most havoc."

Earlier this week, President Barack Obama ordered his administration to come up with a new proposal to curb gun violence. Speaking at the White House, the President said it's time to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, and that the massacre of little children was a wake up call to everyone.

"We won't prevent them all, but that can't be an excuse not to try. It won't be easy," President Obama said.

Gun sales spiked over the weekend as people rushed to get their hands on weapons. Ellermann believes it's because people are beginning to realize they have the ability to protect themselves with arms.

"You can't look for other people to be responsible for you and to keep you safe and to use common sense and situational awareness. That's every person's own responsibility," Ellermann said.

Right now, Texas law states anyone 21-years-old or over can obtain their Concealed Handgun License or purchase a handgun. 18-year-old's are allowed to purchase a rifle, which is a firearm with a longer barrel from a dealer or private seller.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, whether he has a badge or not. Think of it this way...if a cop had stopped the murder would that have been awesome? Yeah, it would've been great. What if it had been an armed security guard? That would have been awesome, too. What if it was just a volunteer with a gun that heard the noise and stopped them short? That would be great. Why not a teacher?" Ellermann explained. "Why are we legislating and disarming the good guys and putting them in a criminal safe zone? It's just a criminal protection act is what a gun safe zone is."

Texas lawmakers are discussing new legislation to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons at school. Current law allows a school district to permit concealed handguns for specific personnel.

The "Protection of Texas Children Act," would permit schools to appoint a member of their faculty, who has had the proper training, to act as a school marshal. This act would also allow teachers to carry concealed weapons.

"I'm not saying arm everybody. I'm not saying mandatory security training for the teachers. But these teachers love their kids, they want to protect them," Ellermann said.

In 2011, there were more than 518,600 active concealed handgun licenses in the state.

have never met a Texan I didn’t like

That's just because you don't really know me. ;)

You are correct. We need to take the fight to the state house and demand that our children and grandchildren are protected.

That means allowing the God-given right for their teachers to carry weapons in defense of the children and themselves.

I’ll be pushing our state house too, as well as any one else I can convince to join in around here. We have lots of guns and hunters here.

I double dog dare you to say that by the time I finish with my Christmas stories from the kid's house.

I started one tonight with the younger daughter... Once upon a time, this last Tuesday... the trash guys... It involves a couch, a garbage truck, crunching noises, and a darn good story, in my way of looking at things. Especially the way the trash guy sorta flipped up when the crusher caught the couch and when he fell he pulled the right lever and crunched it again.

It's the dark days of winter... they bring out the story teller in grandpa. What else ya gonna do? (just shutup about whatever else crosses your mind)

So grandpa sits near the fire and tells stories for the bratlings. Gets folks to fetch him slippers, coffee, and maybe a little something in the coffee.

I expect I'll have a good Christmas. ;)

Might actually be better if I spoke the language there, but no matter, the kids get my stories.
