"Let's do something more than just talk," District Attorney Ed Berberian urged the Board of Supervisors, calling on residents to "turn in their reservoir of guns that are really not needed in our county."

"What can we do? What should we do? How can we stop this from happening?" Berberian asked, summing up the reflections of many. "We are a society with too many guns."

The program, proposed by Supervisor Susan Adams and Berberian, will be coordinated by Berberian's staff and involve locales across the county at which

residents can turn in guns of all kinds.

The proposal follows the slaughter of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Friday.

"It is unimaginable, the pain and grief," Adams said, noting that "We have our own issues of gun violence here in Marin," with shootings in San Rafael and Marin City.

"When do you say, 'enough'?" Adams asked.

Noting that Newtown is similar in many respects to Marin, the district attorney said that what happened in Connecticut "can happen anywhere, at any time."

Officials seemed to agree that while largely symbolic, a gun buy-back program is an initial step. Details including times, places and how much cash will be offered to gun donors will be

Other actions include making sure authorities are trained and equipped to respond, ensuring schools are prepared for emergencies, and that mental health programs receive the attention they deserve, officials said.

Berberian noted that the county sheriff's office has only one "resource" officer to serve 32 schools, a staffing level Supervisor Kate Sears agreed should be expanded.

"It's time to take action to make ourselves better by taking care of others," Sears added, saying gun control, training, mental health and related programs are part of the solution.

Berberian, noting King died in a "senseless act of gun violence," said the civil rights leaders' birthday provides an ideal time to hold a buy-back program. "It would be something ... I'm sure he would support," Berberian said.

Gun buy-back programs in Oakland and San Francisco over the weekend took an arsenal off the streets. Some 349 handguns, 149 rifles, 92 shotguns and another six guns that owners handed over without even waiting for a $200 payment.

Nearly 600 guns — from vintage World War rifles to modern day assault weapons — are in storage waiting to be melted down following what officials in both cities called their most successful buy-back to date.

“Imagine if two million conservatives moved out and moved to AZ, NM, CO, thus making those state solid republican.
It’s just like those conservatives up in the north east and places like IL.”

Oh, how I agree with you. Let LA 8 years ago, and never looked back.

You will never get those illegal aliens to give up their guns. It is one of the reasons they came to America.

Why are you surprised it’s Marin? There are more dirty hippies here than there was during the 1960s in total.

“I know CA looks nice and has nice landscape but why does maybe 2 million conservatives still stay in that state,”

Maybe it’s because we like it here and most of the state (like other states both red and blue) is mostly conservative considering land area. Like me, they would not trade their lives here for life in one of the places you suggest. We have a national problem, and “consolidating conservatives” is a nutty idea that won’t work in the long run. Why don’t you “command” conservatives to have more babies, that would make more sense, but not much.

These gun buy back programs are absoutely fine with me and I wish there were more of them, especially in Lefty areas. The only people that would turn in their guns are stupid liberals. Let Marin county become a ‘gun free zone’ and let the criminals prey on them. Meanwhile, conservatives, living in their enclaves, will keep their guns, including their AR-15s and high cap mags.

Precisely. I’m astonished that more than a small percentage are OK with there being any guns at all in the whole frickin’ county.

Brilliant! Why don’t you liberal guys just paint a target on your family, house, schools and public places? You’ve just made it so much easier for the criminals, whom I’m guessing did NOT make a contribution to the gun confiscation. This level of ignorance is astounding.
