Harry Reid: 'We Are Not Going to Do Anything'
weekly standard ^ | 12/20/12 | d halper

Senate majority leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, made his "fiscal cliff" position clear in a press conference today. "We are not going to do anything," said Reid.

Reid added, "We are not taking up anything they are working on over there."

The top Democrat in the Senate was explaining his inaction on the House plan, the proposal put forward by Republican John Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives. Boehner's plan is being referred to as 'Plan B.'

"Boehner described his Plan B as a fallback option to prevent a sweeping tax hike when tax cuts from the administration of President George W. Bush expire at the end of the year. Sources said the Boehner measure also would include extending the current estate tax and alternative minimum tax, two steps sought by Republicans," reports CNN.

The 'Plan B' option tracks closely to a proposal put forward by Democrats earlier this year.

But now Reid won't even allow the Senate to vote on Boehner's proposal.

In the past, Reid has indicated he'd be open to compromising. "We are willing to compromise," he said earlier this month, "but we also will not consign the middle class to higher tax bills while millionaires and billionaires avoid all the pain."

Now that Republicans have a serious proposal that would pass the House and would seem to meet the requirements Democrats previously insisted on, Reid won't permit a vote.

Except for the top tax rate, the “Plan B” IS the “Bush tax rate cut”, with a proviso it be made permanent.

Harry Reid is the dog in the manger that cannot find his butt with both hands, which is the only reason he is not licking it continually.

"All I'm saying is this is MY line in the sand. Got it?"

Oh, I got it alright. You could give a flying sh#+ about the Constitution. Just like the rest of the GOP traitors.

My line in the sand is building a nuclear waste storage repository for 10 Billion and having some half-a$$&d senator dance into the oval office and have the president shut it down.

No, the GOP is acting very foolish.

In the midst of a greater recession, they keep allowing themselves to be defined as the party of the rich against the poor. They ran Romney, who was defined as a mega rich man, and lost partially because of that perception.

Change the debate. Move it to non welfare, non social security spending. We, as conservatives, are constantly told to sacrifice core principles in order to “win”. Yet the GOP is going to the mattresses on a losing issue, claiming principle. Most people do not, and will not, support keeping the tax cuts on those making over $400K. Call it ignorance, foolishness, or greed, but that is what it is.

Bohener and the GOP have allowed themselves to be played. The next step will be Obama agreeing to Plan B, if the House agrees to a gun ban. And I fear that the GOP and Bohener will go ahead and do it.

So Reid and Obama will be responsible for the 2nd largest tax increase in American History, just behind Obamacare.

Unfort. they (again) using the wrong battle techniques.

They SHOULD, IMHO, be shouting left/right 24/7: “EVERY American deserves to keep as much as their money as possible, as the Senate, led by Henry Reid, has not even passed a budget in over 4 years. With a yearly deficit of 1.5TRILLION dollars, the Fed. gov’t is not being a good steward of the People’s money. NOTHING will pass the house until a balanced budget, that starts reducing the deficit this year, is passed.”

Then walk away until the New Year. WHY is this so hard?!

If there was a true conservative patriot running the house he’d tell Reid “You can pass all you want. But spending issues have to start in the house and we ain’t gonna’ do it. You guys gave obama what he wanted 2 years ago and we’re not going to get in his way.”

Because neither side wants a balance budget. It cuts to many favorite projects, including our little adventures overseas.

And for the majority of people, it will be viewed as making things WORSE. They (the GOP) will be viewed as spoiled children ruining economy because they don’t get their way. That is how it will be spun.

The GOP is stuck. They have no options left. Take the hit, and move on. Every day they mess around with this, is another day they look like fools.

he hasn’t done anything since he hijacked everyone’s health care several years ago, so nothing has changed.

post 45 http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2970829/posts?page=45#45 is right on...

the fact that the rin-o-p is ‘raising’ taxes is a loser of a starting point, and doomed to fail...

RE :”the fact that the rin-o-p is ‘raising’ taxes is a loser of a starting point, and doomed to fail...”

A couple of problems,

1) O would never agree to this tax cut extension B. Every Dem in house was opposed to it, they were key in its defeat.
2) This bill raised no taxes, it just kept ours from going u Jan 1 .
the proof will be that tax increase on us on Jan 1.

But the most important question to me as I have decided LONG ago to put results over cheap rhetoric.
Will this result in something better than B signed into law, or something much worse ???

We will survive the jan 1 tax increase, but will the GOP?

One thing I notice and its entertaining to some degree, and this is not you :

The year after the national election we read many comments that go:
I dont care if the GOP wins the election, Screw them. I want them to do the *right* thing and if that means losing the next election then let it be. Our nation is at stake”

But the year of the election the same ones post :
Republicans HAVE to beat (think of the dem you hate the worst here ) this time around. Those Dems will take away all our guns and kill us using O-care death panels if they win this election. Our nation is at stake”

I guess that fire looks completely different when its the house burning that they are inside of, compared to a fire on black-and-white TV.

did you pick up that truckload of AK47s from walmart warehouse with that rented truck yet? They will be like gold after Pelosi retakes the house in 2015.

My coworker (and friend ) just assured me that O will get most of the blame.

RE :”many around here are gonna die angry that we ‘voted principles’

Vote?
Are you incongress?

Well next year after voters blame O for taxes going up and he begs House Republicans for them all to be made permanent at Bush rates including the 2% and 0.2% they will be lookin pretty silly.

I always did enjoy Pelosi as Speaker anyway, she gave me me much funnier material to post here than Boner did
(How come no one is cursing me for calling him that, lately??)

What they are going to do is let the tax cuts expire. Then come back with a tax bill to lower bottom rate back to 10% with no spending cuts. Then blame Reps for raising taxes on po people (as if they actually paid anything to begin with).
