Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said 'I did my part’ in negotiations with President Barack Obama to avert the fiscal cliff by offering a proposal to raise taxes on millionaires.
Just hours before the House plans to vote on the Speaker’s “Plan B,” which will raise the marginal tax rate for people earning $1 million or more per year to 39.6 percent, Boehner said Republicans have done “everything we can” to avoid the fiscal cliff.
The fiscal cliff refers to the expiration of the Bush tax rates and the start of automatic spending cuts (sequestration) on Jan. 2, unless Congress and the White House act. The tax issues also include the child tax deduction; the end of the 10 percent bracket; and the Alternative Minimum Tax.
“President Obama and Senate Democrats haven’t done much of anything,” Boehner said during a Capitol Hill press conference today. “Their Plan B is to slow walk us over the fiscal cliff.”
“For weeks the White House has said that if I moved on rates, that they would make substantial concessions on spending cuts and entitlement reform,” Boehner said.
“I did my part,” he said. “They’ve done nothing.”
“The president’s last offer of $1.3 trillion in new revenue [taxes] with only $850 billion worth of spending reductions fails to meet the test of ‘balanced’ that he continues to call for.”
“Frankly,” Boehner continued, “I’m convinced that the president is unwilling to stand up to his own party on the big issues that face our country. Time is running short.”
“The House will act today and it’ll be up to the Senate Democrats and the White House to act,” he said.

So the Senate is adjourning.
The House will remain tomorrow after tonite's vote and work on the sequester.
So we have the days ahead to say "we're working still on this and the Senate is vacationing."

I just think that we should be playing hardball. You f@#k us on this cliff deal and we f#$k you for the next two years on the debt ceiling. NO RAISES.
that’s exactly right, and it’s why I am puzzled why so many Republicans seem to think it would be smart to walk away from the deal the White House offered Boehner, which frankly was very close to the deal Boehner offered the White House?
If we go over the cliff because the Republicans say, “Hell No, we won’t go!” then really what have we accomplished?? Isn’t a compromise with Obama better than what current law has in it, which is a reversion to 2000??
It would be a better idea to define what "the cliff" actually is. The only cliff here is the same cliff we saw 16 months ago. The cliff has nothing to do with tax rates or spending cuts. The only "cliff" here is in regard to continuing to print up more money to fund government. If Boehner would simply announce that it is time to cut up the government credit card, he would have the support of the American people. Instead, he allows Obama to define it as something that it is not.
This whole charade is cover for the biggest tax increase of all - the devaluation of the currency. Give Obama anything else, but DO NOT give him the ability to expand our money supply by another $5 trillion.

I agree. Bonehead has been so out front and so overexposed, that
the Public will blame him and the GOP, because he HAS BECOME
the face of the cliff. And his desperation has showed.
The less vulnerable (millionaires, billionaires) are clever enough to shield themselves. They're smarter...which is why they're where they are.
The mid-level businesses would be protected by this bill and as a result there will far less people being fired.

It is a meaningless vote that puts his members in a bad position of voting for a Tax increase.

Voting for a tax increase?? Taxes are going to go up 4 times as much if they DON’T vote for it.
Anything that stops a compromise with the White House is a vote for the biggest tax increase of all!!
We rolled the dice in 2011 that we would win the White House in 2012 and we’d be able to craft our own solution to the fiscal cliff. Well, we lost. So now you want to murder the US economy with massive tax hikes in order to say you didn’t vote for a much smaller one? Are you stupid?>>

Boehner’s mistake all along has been to negotiate with the president. The president, i.e. the executive, should play no part in the crafting of legislation (other than persuading individual members). The president’s only role in legislation is to sign a bill or reject a bill with his objections. If the president wants to legislate, let him go back to the senate.
Boehner is finally doing the right thing in having the actually vote on something. It is not a “political stunt” or an “exercise in futility.” It is their governmental function. Whether the president vetoes it should it get to him or if the senate fails to take up the bill is not the consern of the House. Once the House passes a bill, that is the end of it for them unless it comes back to them from either the senate or the president. Apparantly neither will be happening so Boehner is doing his part. Whether the bill is any good is a different question.
Regular legislative order is the key to liberty. No surprise that Obama and the democrats are working to undermine it.
