Teachers union rejects NRA’s call for armed security in schools
washingtonexaminer.com ^ | December 21, 2012

Posted on 12/21/2012 2:25:38 PM PST by Tailgunner Joe

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement in reaction to National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s press conference today:

After remaining silent for an entire week following the Newtown massacre, the NRA’s first comments were to call for more guns in our schools and our society. This is both irresponsible and dangerous. No matter how much money the NRA spends or propaganda it tries to spread, one thing is clear—the NRA is not serious about confronting the epidemic of gun violence in our nation.

Schools must be safe sanctuaries, not armed fortresses. Anyone who would suggest otherwise doesn’t understand that our public schools must first and foremost be places where teachers can safely educate and nurture our students.

The teachers unions and RAT politicians would rather have dead children than armed guards. Before this they did not object to armed resourse officers, metal detectors or lockdowns. They smell blood in the water.

This is one time where I agree with the union. Armed guards will simply condition more children to a police state and accept the TSA/IRS etc. as just part of life. The schools are already constitution free zones, adding a police state will not further the cause of liberty.

A more radical solution is privatize education, shut down the public schools and get the government out of the child raising business. IN my home school we have had no killings, but we have had plenty of shootings, my children do not get disciplined for quoting the Bible, in fact we encourage it. If you do not want to live in a socialist nation you have to get the public out of the socialist incubator. Public funded education has helped to destroy family solidarity, science, entrepreneurship, and education.

As long as the government and the schools insist that my children and grandchildren go to their schools, I insist that they protect them first. When they take the care and education of children away from parents, they also take on the responsibility of protecting that child while under their care.

Providing opportunity for the teachers, or some member of the school staff, to be armed, defeats the whole purpose of “No Gun Zones”. The idea is to raise children free of involvement with handguns or side arms, to the point that young boys are not permitted to have toy guns, and to even raise your hand with forefinger extended, and saying “Bang, bang!” is to get yourself suspended from school. So what would it say for the teacher to be armed?

You betcha this would cause a squawk from the educationalists around the country. They have been carefully inoculating their small charges with the belief that guns, in and of themselves, are evil, and to even THINK about using them is also evil. They have effectively cowed the children into being conformist, long before they have developed any critical thinking on their own, and as insurance that they shall NEVER achieve a degree of independence that could challenge the status that is being created bit by bit every day.

No matter how morally wrong it turns out to be.

the right couldn't PR themselves out of a wet paper bag

You sure got that right. It's about time the Right became Macchiavellian when confronting the left; the Right should learn something from the Alinskyites.

“Knee jerk hysteria from the teacher’s unions. This is what amazes me: there already are armed police officers in two states that I know of: Texas and Florida. Yesterday when I stopped at a high school in my town, there was an armed police officer sitting behind the counter with the receptionist.”

Knee jerk is right. They are only objecting to armed guards because the NRA proposed it. The fact that armed officers have been in schools for a decade without their objection proves it. If the NRA proposed putting desks in classrooms they would object. The NRA proposed a reasonable measure to make schools safer but they are hysterical because banning guns wasnt a part of it.

Not what we need- TSA gropers now groping the kids at school as well.

“The Artemis Project” is a good idea. No unions and no cost to the district.

Forget gun control. Forget armed security in the schools. DISCIPLINE children at home and in the schools. Children today are Godless, rouge zoo animals with no guidance or discipline and no MEN around them at home, or at school, or in daycare. 100% estrogen role models for boys ain’t workin’!!!

Take for instance the story about Rahm Emanuel and his outrageous comments that was just posted. The NRA should convene yet another press conference and shove Emanuel’s words where the sun don’t shine. Will they do it? Nope.

Once they figure out they will be SEIU guards they will want them.

More union workers and they will be pushing for it.

Typical liberal. If we just let them talk they’re show their stupidity and most of the time they’ll contradict themselves.

She says the NRA wants to bring MORE guns into school. More guns? There were absolutely zero guns in Sandy Hook until a nut case brought some in.

Teachers should be able to teach without the fear of violence? That’s exactly what the NRA is saying.

Schools should be santuaries and not armed fortresses? They’re now UNARMED fortresses.

Definitely not, just trying to apply their own absurd logic. NRA suggested some volunteer guards.

You’ve had plenty of shootings in your home school?

Ummm, care to expand on that?
