Arne Duncan Says ‘Reasonable People’ Should Back Gun Restrictions

Two hours before the National Rifle Association told the country that guns were not to blame for the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today said that “reasonable people” should be able to overcome their differences on the issue and work to craft tougher laws.

Duncan, a member of Vice President Joe Biden’s new task force charged with finding solutions to America’s gun violence, said the goal should be to support “common sense” measures such as banning “assault weapons” and high-capacity ammunition, and closing gun-show loopholes in the background-check process.

“Reasonable people should be able to agree on these restrictions,” Duncan said, speaking at an elementary school in Northeast Washington today. “As the president has pointed out, many of these ideas are backed by members of the NRA and were, in fact, supported by President Reagan.” ....

“I don’t pretend to have all the answers but since last Friday a week ago, I do believe the world has fundamentally changed,” Duncan said.

In addition to school administrators, Duncan said he wanted to talk with gun owners, hunters and sport shooters to get their advice on what leaders can do to secure schools.

“We have common values that go far beyond the constitutional right to bear arms,” Duncan said. “We value the right to live our daily lives and to pursue our dreams without fear, but last week the dreams of 26 people in Newtown Connecticut were cut short at an elementary school because one disturbed man was mad at the world.”

I too support reasonable gun control. The current 20,000 pages of gun laws are blatantly unreasonable so we need to cut back.

so let me get this straight-we have armed security and mandatory searches/pat downs to voluntarily fly as adults and no security at all for mandatory attendance of kids in schools.

home schooling makes more sense all the time.

Thanks Arne, but if you were paying attention, you’d know we already have enough restrictions.

Just because you and DiFi want everything this side of a butter knife, classified as an “Assault Weapon”, doesn’t mean you’re “reasonable”.

I doubt there are easy answers for what to do with the handful of mass killers every year, but to reduce overall violent crime, we need criminal control actions, not new gun control.

Gun control is kinda like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

‘word games'

Same talking point as Obama. "Reasonable people should agree."

The implication is that if you don't back gun restrictions then you are irrational.

How far is that from declaring one's political enemies to be psychologically disturbed and shipping them off to Siberia for re-education?

446 children, mostly black, have been shot in Chicago. They don’t want to talk about that. That means they’re racists.

They’re coming for the guns. And anything that is not a single shot will be considered an assault weapon.

“Reasonable people” would let people defend themselves.

A natural right.

We conservatives, we do not accept bipartisanship in the pursuit of tyranny. Period. We will not negotiate the terms of our economic and political servitude. Period. We will not abandon our child to a dark and bleak future. We will not accept a fate that is alien to the legacy we inherited from every single future generation in this country. We will not accept social engineering by politicians and bureaucrats who treat us like lab rats, rather than self-sufficient human beings. There are those in this country who choose tyranny over liberty. They do not speak for us, 57 million of us who voted against this yesterday, and they do not get to dictate to us under our Constitution.

We are the alternative. We will resist. We're not going to surrender to this. We will not be passive, we will not be compliant in our demise. We're not good losers, you better believe we're sore losers! A good loser is a loser forever. Now I hear we're called 'purists.' Conservatives are called purists. The very people who keep nominating moderates, now call us purists the way the left calls us purists. Yeah, things like liberty, and property rights, individual sovereignty, and the Constitution, and capitalism. We're purists now. And we have to hear this crap from conservatives, or pseudo-conservatives, Republicans.

-Mark Levin.

I'm not reasonable either.

It’s time to put politics aside, and pass a law requiring all teachers be issued sidearms and be trained to use it. Also make firearms training a required part of getting a teaching degree. Teacher who refuse should be suspended until they get psychiatric counseling for their hoplophobia. Some people may say this goes to far, but we mus act quickly for the sake of the children.

Isn't this the guy that advocated sterilants in drinking water?

Its a tired old standard ploy. The group that tried to prevent concealed carry in Michigan some years ago called themselves "People who care about kids" with the insinuation that you supported concealed carry, you didn't care about kids.

Reasonable people also believe that the Department of Education is unconstitutional, and should be scrapped. And that Arne Duncan should go back to teaching P.E. in a junior high school in Podunk.

The left has an uncanny ability to create or hijack terms that mean precisely the opposite of what they sound like.

Women’s Healthcare (abortion), Administrative Simplification (HIPAA), Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
