Gun owners give up weapons for groceries

SAN DIEGO — Gun owners had a chance to exchange weapons for Friday morning.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the United African American Ministerial Action Council held another installment of their “Guns for Gift Cards” program from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tubman/Chavez Multicultural Center in Valencia Park.

The program allows people to turn in working-condition guns, no questions asked, in exchange for monetary vouchers redeemable at area grocery stores. Shotguns and rifles bring $50 credit each, while pistols and assault-type weapons fetch $100 apiece.

Participants must place the weapons, unloaded, in the trunk of their cars before arriving at the event, where uniformed officers will provide further instructions. All collected guns will be destroyed.

Since the program began four years ago, a total of 851 firearms have been impounded, officials said.

An outlay of $10,000 in asset-forfeiture funds paid for the gift cards that will go to those discarding their guns Friday, according to the sheriff’s department.

Is it just me, or is this another stupid government program?

A good analogy could be the government creating another buyback program in which fishermen would trade in their rods and reels (no questions asked!) for some fish-sticks or a fillet-of-fish sandwich.

The road to serfdom is nearing completion.

They were giving out cash here...then they found out they were using the money to buy better guns.

Brilliant! Reward criminals.

You know Barry’s “transformation” is kicking in when people have to turn in their gun for something to eat. I guess that “Give a man a fish...” thing wouldn’t work here either.

If there are any freepers in the area they should go down there and offer cash to the idiots standing in line. You could probably pick up a working shotgun for $60 or a pistol for $110. They would make good stocking stuffers.

Fifty dollars for say a mint condition 1894 Winchester 30-30? I think not. Now I’ve this rusted piece of junk I’ll let go for $50.

Most are.

A few rare antiques may have to go to museums because too many people know of them, which a story was reported about this on FR not too long ago. A few may end up in private hands.

Granted some of these weapons may be stolen and may be in the hands of people who use them for bad reasons. That said, the people who are turning them in because they need the money should get lots of canned food. Perhaps if their aim is really, really good, they can use the canned items to defend themselves if they need to.

Only people that will turn in firearms for $50 are those that stole them in the first place. And a “potential” criminal will turn in an unneeded gun for $50 when he can get at least 5 times that on the street for any working gun? yeah, right.

As the Instapundit repeats often, "first you make them beggars, 'cause they're easier to please."

Just think, this is from the state where the CITIZENS voted NOT TO BAN HANDGUNS back in 1982.

Kali has been trying to get around that vote since.

They did it in Boston a few years back.

$200.00 Target gift cards for a gun.

Guess what? It’s even worse now.

Idiocy rules the day!

I learn something new all the time. I never knew African Americans were such avid deer hunters until I saw all the rifles that are turned in at these gun buy backs.

They're nuts if they don't check them for ballistics -- and fingerprints/DNA. Not to mention checking the SN against reported stolen firearms. Of course, this is California, so it's possible.

Investigating those weapons might produce evidence that will interefere with their narrative of “reasonable, concerned citizens turning in their firearms for the public good”.

OK, so let’s do it this way:

Gun “buyback”: $250 per gun with the upfront declaration that all guns will be checked for ballistics against crime lab database. Don’t even mention fingerprints.

Be interesting to see what happens.
