Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele called the National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s press conference Friday “very haunting and very disturbing,” in the wake of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
“I don’t even know where to begin. As a supporter of the Second Amendment and a supporter of the NRA — even though I’m not a member of the NRA — I just found it very haunting and very disturbing that our country now is talking about arming our teachers and our principals in classrooms,” Steele said on MSNBC immediately after LaPierre finished his comments.
Steele continued: “What does that say about us? What does that say about us? I do not believe that is where the American people want to go. I do not believe that is the response that should be coming out of the tragedy out of Newtown.”
Delaware State Attorney General Beau Biden — who is Vice President Joe Biden’s son — said there wasn’t a meaningful dialogue in the press conference, in which LaPierre did not take reporters’ questions.
Biden added: “[There] has to be a much more robust and meaningful dialogue about whether there are certain types of weapons consistent with the second amendment … that just shouldn’t be in the hands of citizens other than those types of assault weapons that you take to battle that don’t belong in our communities. And that’s the discussion that I hope we have in a meaningful way.”
Had the distinct privilege of listening to this genius following Mark Levin’s program. Kinda’ like following a lowland single malt with moonshine.
And that is the problem..how the hell do we fix that?

The RP is obviously infested with them, the congress we elected as conservatives is obviously infested with them and the people we elect to the senate and presidency are infested with them.
It's becoming increasingly apparent to me that we'll never be able to elect a conservative to any kind of position of power as long as we have RINO's in the RP and political leadership picking our candidates for us.
The RINO's in the RP have given us Bush 1, bush 2, McCain, Romney, Boehner, McConnell etc., and pretty much said, "Vote!" And we've been stupid enough to vote for them.
Dunno about the rest but think it's time for yours truly to leave the party.
I was watching Fox Business earlier and I heard this guy say that he thinks that there are at least 20 Republicans who would vote to raise taxes for those making 250K..if that’s the case, I want names!!! Any Republican who would agree with Obama and agree with Obama on raising taxes for small business owners, I want their head on a platter.
To see the GOP go in this way is really disturbing. Its like what the hell do we have left..maybe create a whole new party called the Conservative Party..I am willing to join because if the GOP hops on board with wanting to ban “assault weapons” which will only be the beginning, next will come ALL the guns..than I want no part of the GOP anymore..raising taxes would be bad enough, wiping their butts with the 2nd Amendment would be too much for me to take
Look who they gave us as a pres candidate this time. Pro abortion, pro global warning, pro immigration Mitt Romney. Next Jeb bush is being floated already. It isn't going to get better. The RINO's control the party and the party picks who to back as candidates. It's as easy as that. I see no hope of change within the party.
I'm going to check out some other options. American Conservative Party, Consitution party etc.

The idea of conservatives pushing for millions more armed government employees is very disturbing.
Gun free zones was the invitation to gun bans.

It certainly is.
But that doesn't have to happen and in fact it shouldn't happen if done correctly. We should be using "the militia", which is also a concept enshrined in many State constitutions. (see my post #21)
Of course, Liberals and unions would fight it tooth and nail because it disperses power and authority back to the lower levels and the people and utilizes non-union labor and rules. It would also ruin their "gun free zone" meme.
The real problem is massive media coverage in a country of more than 300 million people. The murder of school-aged children is down 42% from the early ‘90s and only 2% of school-aged murders take place in schools, despite the great amount of time that students spend there.
School already is the safest place for man, woman or child to be, and however horrific this crime it is no excuse to plow massive resources into guarding the safest place one could be.
We’d do far better to direct our resources elsewhere—even if only on making money, as a stronger economy makes everyone safer.
That's the whole point I am making. This is a relatively inexpensive solution made up mostly of trained volunteers.
Sure, there are some expenses.
It would probably be wise to have somebody like a retired or off duty policeman as shift supervisor over the volunteers when the school is in session. Perhaps he could be paid a nominal stipend. Maybe the volunteers could be paid a small per diem to cover their costs like the county does for jury duty. Likely, the NRA would offer liability insurance and free training and certification. The volunteers should probably be deputized by the County Sheriff, as a liability and chain-of-command issue. The security would also need two-way radio communications and who knows... perhaps even a locker with bullet proof vests to issue daily to those on duty.
Frankly, I don't know all the details. Each school district is different and their Boards would have to figure them out. But expenses for each school would probably be less than that of a single full time cop on a shift.
This should not be a program to bulk up the paid union "professional" numbers or add more expensive and useless layers of government workers to an already bloated education system. It is a mostly volunteer plan, manned by trained citizen volunteers (including teachers and staff) ultimately supervised by the Sheriff or local police department and under the jurisdiction of the local School Boards. It puts genuine power and responsibility back into the hands of the community.
Of course, for many of the above reasons, Liberals and the public unions would strongly oppose it.
I know what you’re aiming at, but I think it is a) the last place we need more security and b) nothing gets implemented in schools nationwide cheaply. It just doesn’t.

Tell that to the good people of Sandy Hook, and the school administrators - those who are still alive.

You're right. Nothing is cheap, especially when you get the feds involved. This isn't their program. Their noses should be out of it. They don't get to say how we run our local volunteer fire departments, do they? Perhaps some State laws would need tweaking but that is pretty much the extent to which the State should be involved.
This should be a grass roots program, paid for and run 100% at the local level, and voluntary for each school district. It's also a badly needed exercise in civil defense and responsibility.
Those schools who opt out of it for whatever reason are welcome to do so. My bet is if it is implemented, after the next school massacre the holdouts will quickly become eager participants.
