Steyn: Tapper’s promotion to CNN a lesson for the ‘J-school zombies’ in the WH press corps
dailycaller.com ^ | 12/21/2012

On Thursday in his weekly appearance on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, National Review columnist Mark Steyn explained what was to be learned from Jake Tapper’s decision to leave ABC, where he had been the network’s White House correspondent, for an anchoring position at CNN.

Steyn, author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” said that while the rest of the reporters in the briefing room at the White House have very uninspiring approaches to their questioning of the president, Tapper is the exception.

“People think it’s odd that Jake Tapper, who is nobody’s idea of a right-wing nut or anything, but he’s the guy in there, the only guy in there, that’s worth having in there who ever asks anything interesting in the hope of eliciting an interesting answer,” Steyn said. “And look at how much fun that guy has. If I were one of those nothing — those robots in the room, those J-school zombies filing up the room alongside Jake Tapper, that’s what I’d be saying. I’d be saying, ‘Look at the fun this guy is having.’ That’s the only reason to go into journalism. It’s a lousy paying profession. It’s dying in the United States. I mean, it’s dying in a lot of places. But it’s dying faster here, and he’s having so much fun.”

My Firefox did, too.

Something's probably up then. Maybe they got hacked. Never heard of that causing that warning or installing malware, but I guess it's possible.

I don’t understand why guys don’t get it. There are great reputations to be made. He’s the prime example of it.”

They don't get it because most of the folks who become journalists have not the wit to ask any but programmed questions or ask intelligent followups.

So as I understand it (since Firefox blocked the article), Tapper has been removed from the WH press corps because he asked too many hard questions and now he’s being banished to CNN which no one watches anyway. And he thinks this is a promotion? That about right?

"I don’t understand why guys don’t get it. There are great reputations to be made. He’s the prime example of it."

The answer is very simple. The rest of the "guys in the room" would rather have an immediate pat on the head, and a "good boy" from Obama, than strive for only the possibility of future rewards from the public.

I doubt that Steyn wrote the headline, but going from Abc to CNN is hardly a promotion. CNN has been reduced to not much more than airport Muzak.

I wonder if there’s been any vitriol yet from the Obamabots over Tapper’s new job?

Jake Tapper is one of the few journalists in DC who plays it down the middle. A bit to the left but down the middle. If the mainstream media was same as Tapper, Obama would have never won in 2008 or 2012. Just via simple investigations into his Chicago sleaze and Chicago real estate deals. Just by asking for school admission records (affirnative action?) and transcripts. Just by asking for more on the birth certificate and SS number

American news “anchors” have higher status than “journalists” with regard to both income and social standing. It’s hard to fault Tapper merely for having ambitions.

Wikipedia’s definition of a zombie -
A zombie is an animated corpse resurrected by mystical means, such as witchcraft. The term is often figuratively applied to describe a hypnotized person bereft of consciousness and self-awareness, yet ambulant and able to respond to surrounding stimuli...
According to the tenets of Vodou, a dead person can be revived by a bokor, or sorcerer. Zombies remain under the control of the bokor since they have no will of their own.

Mark Styn’s description of “J-school zombies” very accurately describes our “main stream media” don’t ya think?

The take here is that Steyn is making too big a fuss over Tapper's supposed "promotion," when in fact he is merely moving from one MSM organ to another. Could it be that ABC was about to fire Tapper or move him out of the White House anyway?

The end result of ABC replacing Tapper at the WH with just an ordinary lefty drone will just be smoother sailing for Obama at his press conferences.

As for CNN, I'd be quite surprised if Tapper changes the lefty political culture there much if at all.

Tapper gets to anchor, which is the top of the career pyramid, so, of course he’d take that. He brings journalistic credibility back to CNN, something in decline since the Gulf War, and eventually missing altogether, and as Steyn said, Tapper’s not a conservative, so there’s no chance of changing the lefty culture at CNN — viewers will do that. In a couple of years, who knows, we may be still sulking here about the Arab-backed co-opting of Fox News after their 24/7 smears of Israel during the next war with the Hizzies and Hamas, while remarking how much better CNN has gotten.

“There was some FOX reporterette years ago to went to CNN. She didn’t last but a couple years and was never heard from again.”

That reporterette could be Kiran Chetry.......

In 2001 Chetry joined the cable news network Fox News Channel as a general reporter… In late 2005, she became a regular co-host on the network’s weekend morning news program, Fox & Friends Weekend...

On February 16, 2007, Chetry began work as a CNN anchor and correspondent… Her first American Morning broadcast was on April 16, 2007… Kiran’s last day on American Morning and at CNN was July 29, 2011.

“On Thursday in his weekly appearance on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, National Review columnist Mark Steyn explained what was to be learned from Jake Tapper’s decision to leave ABC, where he had been the network’s White House correspondent, for an anchoring position at CNN.

I’d be saying, ‘Look at the fun this guy is having.’ That’s the only reason to go into journalism. It’s a lousy paying profession. It’s dying in the United States. I mean, it’s dying in a lot of places. But it’s dying faster here, and he’s having so much fun.”

To Hewitt, author of “The Brief Against Obama: The Rise, Fall & Epic Fail of the Hope & Change Presidency,” the promotion was one that mainstream journalists should think about if they want to succeed.

“I think Tapper’s promotion is deeply subversive of the MSM, Mark, because CNN, which is desperate has turned to the only honest — he’s not a conservative,” Hewitt said. “He’s not even close to being — but they’ve turned to the only honest reporter as a means of restoring their credibility, which does message to the rest of them if you want to rise, you’re going to have to be like Tapper.”

Steyn agreed with Hewitt, calling it a lesson to all the “deadbeats” covering the president.

“I think that’s the lesson here,” Steyn said. “He’s the only — if you happen to be in an airport somewhere, and a White House press conference comes on, he’s the only guy whose question and answer you’re the least bit interested in following. And he’s been rewarded for that. That should be a great example for to all the other deadbeats in the room. I don’t understand why guys don’t get it. There are great reputations to be made. He’s the prime example of it.”

In addition to hosting his own show for the network, Tapper will also become CNN’s Washington bureau chief.”
