Hazel Crest police searching for an escaped prisoner from the Metropolitan Correctional Center, traversed back yards in the south Chicago suburb....a Rhodesian Ridgeback (who the owner and others maintain was a friendly dog) was somehow perceived as a threat - and escaped the owner's yard (likely because police opened the gate themselves). And the answer: shoot and kill the dog?

Unbelievable isn't it? But this is - according to reports - exactly what happened.

This is the second occurrence in the Chicago area in a month of a friendly dog shot by police. A 7-month old pup survived when an Chicago Police Officer shot at him, December 1 on the north side. According to witnesses, the puppy was busily sniffing at a tree, as the police officer was busily writing a parking ticket. What's more those bullets aimed at the innocent puppy ricocheted and could have hit innocent people nearby, including a baby in a stroller.

As for the shooting in Hazel Crest, according to WLS-TV reports, the police department had no comment. They did issue the dog's owner, Chanette Weaver, a $50 citation for 'having an animal at large.' ...

I live in the America. Why am I afraid police might enter my home and shoot my dog? A few years ago the thought would have seemed ridiculous, paranoid, but things are different now. How did it happen? There is something mighty wrong here. How can it be stopped?

How did it happen?

Did you complain about bogus child molestation witch hunts 20 years ago?

Did you complain about Ruby Ridge?

Did you think only liberals and minorities were offended by Rodney King's beating?

Were you in the majority who applauded showing those nuts in Waco to respect law enforcement?

Were you in the majority who applauded showing Elian and those nuts in Miami to respect law enforcement?

Were you in the majority who think only liberals oppose torture and warantless wiretapping?

Have you ever thought that Rudy Giuliani had any redeeming value?

My FRiend, this is what happens in democracy. People don't want freedom. They want LEADERS and at heart, all people want fascism. You think we are more "exceptional" than the poor Germans or Russians who'd just survived the slaughter WWI? HA! Nobody ever won an election campaigning for fewer laws and weaker government. It's only gonna' get worse. The dogs are the proverbial canary in the coal mine for all of us. Place your faith in your family, not the remnants of the USA.

The question that should be asked is why does this happen so much more in the USA compared to other countries?

Well, it looks like the Chicago cops need more time at the range ‘cause the story says the pup survived. Too bad the pup couldn’t return fire.

“You shoot my dog for no god da**ed reason and you better watch your back for the rest of your life.”

At my place it would be dead cop in the driveway! These killings are absolutely abhorent. Time some of the perps got punished by the dog’s owners.

“What would this ordinance say?”

It can say whatever dog lovers want it to say. Tell the cops to never shoot a dog - wait for animal control no matter what the danger.

Just pass a law they like or stop complaining.

Yes, canaries in the coal mine. The people may not be exceptional; they have had an exceptional Constitution thrust upon them and have not been able to appreciate or maintain it for all the reasons and experiences implied in your questions and analysis.

It doesn’t take a dog lover to recognize an abuse of power, and a change in the relationship between cops and citizens from a partnership to an adversarial one.

You shoot my dog for no god da**ed reason and you better watch your back for the rest of your life.

I would definitely get my revenge.

Then do something. Change the law. Don’t be so helpless.

Different dog survived. The one the main story is about was shot 3 times. The owner was interviewed on WLS a couple days ago. Very sad story. Cops asked her if she had a garbage bag, then gave her a $50 ticket and drove away. She later went and filed a report about the incident. They refused to give her a photocopy of her own report.
