Contrary to reports earlier in the day, President Barack Obama is not offering a "new" proposal to avert the year-end fiscal cliff during a meeting at the White House today.
Rather, Obama is reiterating previous positions on income-tax rates and other components of the cliff, Reuters reports.
He will ask Congressional leaders at the meeting for a concrete counterproposal. If there is none, he will ask for an up-or-down vote on his plan in Congress.
At 3:10 p.m., Obama began his meeting at the White House with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
The meeting comes after a frantic day in fiscal-cliff negotiations on Thursday, during which reports of a new offer from President Obama to Senate Republicans was quickly shot down by the White House and Democratic aides.
Boehner also called the House back for a rare Sunday session. Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said last night that Boehner plans to push his message that the onus is now on the Senate.
"Speaker Boehner will attend a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House, where he will continue to stress that the House has already passed legislation to avert the entire fiscal cliff and now the Senate must act," Buck said.

I would prefer to go over the cliff rather than dance to Obama’s tune. He is the one bankrupting America. The GOP don’t have to help him!
One proposal, with the same two predications - raise taxes on the top two brackets, to punitive levels, and give the White House unilateral authority to raise the debt limit at his discretion.
Nothing is changed. To give in on this is to hand the matches and flame accelerant to the avowed arsonist.

It’s very hard for most people who are not attuned to accept that, but maybe, maybe, eventually they’ll see the truth.

Of course there is no “plan” just positions on a couple issues.
A real leader brings people together to accomplish things, not break them apart. Obama is an epic failure.

The REAL hope is that Obama goes off a cliff......
Go over the cliff and no extension of the unemployment and no increase in the debt limit. Shut down non essential government services.
Once a proper budget has been submitted by the administration we can start to discuss which non essential services we want to bring back online and which should be discontinued. No more pork barrel, green projects, foreign aid, or other wasting of the people's funds.

You got that right. I dare say that it’s to hand a communist a flamethrower to thoroughly and quickly destroy and dispose of this Republic.
Failure is defined by goals. His goal of bringing this country to its knees while the GOP gets the blame is his goal.
He is laughing at the GOPe because they are doing all the work for him. He has not missed one tee time or talk show due to having to work overtime to bring the greatest nation ever to its end.
Boehner and McConnell are his personal useful idiots.
How can he ask Congress for an up or down vote on his ‘plan’? Wouldn’t they have to write a bill first? Throwing the Constitution out the window and using new rules has me all confused.
I hope Boehner goes straight to the press and tells them that ultumatums aren’t negotiation and won’t work.
If Obama persists with his classless demeaning behavior toward Republicans (a certainty) Boehner should cancel the SOTU address. PLEASE!
