Two rocket launchers at gun buyback didn't surprise LAPD chief

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck was not surprised that the city's gun buyback event this week collected two rocket launchers.

Beck said he's used to military-style weapons being turned in at such events. He noted that neither of the launchers had rockets in them so they did not pose a danger.

Still, he said such weapons have no place on the streets of L.A.

"Those are weapons of war, weapons of death," Beck said. "These are not hunting guns. These are not target guns. These are made to put high-velocity, extremely deadly, long-range rounds down-range as quickly as possible, and they have no place in our great city."

The buyback yielded 2,037 firearms, including 75 assault weapons and two rocket launchers, officials said. The total was nearly 400 more weapons than were collected in a similar buyback earlier this year.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the collection at two locations was so successful that the city ran out of money for supermarket gift cards and got a private donation through the city controller to replenish the pot.

The gun buyback was moved up from its usual Mother's Day date in response to the massacre Dec. 14 that claimed the lives of 26 people, including 20 students, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

"As you can see to my right and left, these weren't just guns that weren't functioning anymore," Villaraigosa said at a news conference Thursday morning. "These were serious guns — semiautomatic weapons, guns that have no place on the streets of Los Angeles or any other city."

He is wrong. We do need rocket launchers and more if we are to protect ourselves from an out of control government that has them too.

At the Pomona gun shows I saw people selling the one-use launch tubes for military antitank rockets. You can’t reload them or anything, they are just tubes with handles once the ordinance is gone. An expensive wall hanger.

What exactly does it mean for there to be weapons "on the streets"?

So, they insist an rpg7 is unfit for hunting? I beg to differ. Big enough game, and they’re just right.

We need nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, bombers, tanks

If you’re hunting tanks, you’d want one. The old Molotov cocktail doesn’t work that well anymore.

I saw one of the CNN idiots wetting her panties about this. I knew she was talking about useless empty tubes. Do they have no editors at all.

Weapons of death that are extremely deadly, he said. Is there any other kind?

I wonder how much he’d pay me for my empty brass. After all, it’s “...made to put high-velocity, extremely deadly, long-range rounds down-range as quickly as possible...”

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck... said such weapons have no place on the streets of L.A. "Those are weapons of war, weapons of death," Beck said. "These are not hunting guns. These are not target guns. These are made to put high-velocity, extremely deadly, long-range rounds down-range as quickly as possible, and they have no place in our great city."

The 2nd Amendment does not protect the right to sporting goods.

Those "weapons of war" are to kill and destroy standing armies, such as those in the employ of Chief Beck, should they infringe on the liberties of the people using force.

Our Founders would have used those rocket launchers already.

This post will probably get deleted, but it's high time we patriot gun owners stopped hiding among with the Fudds and proudly proclaim what the 2nd Amendment is for.

The Army is getting rid of M16s all the time (old ones), body armor (PSGAT old stuff), PVS4 etc... all the time.

Can I get one of those? I the tax payer bought a bit of it and sure would like a chance at buying one, we are after all selling every other weapon system known to God to anyone that can pay, so why can't I buy one?

If we sell F16s to Egypt and Pakistan today, we “gave” chem weapons to Saddam and then complained when he used them... Hell, the Iranians fly our F14 and F4 to this day! They also have our Hawk missile system, M109s... I am a US tax payer, not an Islamic fanatic and I would like to have a chance at buying some of those military items we sell to others and which I paid for with my tax money.

SHe’s just being that way for hype. Probably has no clue and her editors want it that way, it plays to the camera better.

The picture I saw was of the LAPD police chief holding up an AT-4 tube with “training” written on it. The police bought an inert training tube, not a real rocket launcher.

I suppose a gangster could bludgeon someone to death with it. But wouldn’t a baseball bat or a length of 2 x 4 be more effective?

Discarded LAW’s —fiberglass tubes. Big deal, they look impressive but are completely innocuous.

They only impress people who know NOTHING about them. Of course that’s ALL presstitutes...

When I was in Texas, I was looking for an old M72 LAW to keep in my rifle rack, (an empty tube of course).
