A tour bus careened through a guardrail on an icy Oregon highway and several hundred feet down an embankment Sunday, killing five people and injuring about 20 others, authorities said.

The charter bus carrying about 40 people lost control around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon, according to the Oregon State Police.

Lt. Greg Hastings said the accident happened on the west end of the Blue Mountains, and west of an area called "Deadman Pass," where stretches of the highway tend to be icy in winter months.

Something has to be done about these “assault” buses.

Amazing that most of the people survived plummeting hundreds of feet down a slope in a bus. I doubt any of them had seat belts on (do buses even have seat belts?)

School buses still don’t. I don’t know about commercial passenger or tour buses.

I hope the foolhardy driver was one of those killed. Idiots don’t know ice is slick.

I’m always amazed at how fast idiots drive on iced roads and overpasses. In this past week’s snow/icestorm, I heard Fox News report (during WMAL’s morning show news break) a record 600+ accidents in Minneapolis’ morning rush hour. You’d think that up there, they’d know better. I stayed home and off the roads until the carnage was over, here in PA.

They need to LICENSE and REGISTER those dangerous objects. And then ban them if necessary.

Where are the DEMOCRATS on this CARNAGE?

I remember watching on the news one time years ago in I think Atlanta they had a major freeze come through. As the cars came over this hill they hit ice and lost control and they would start spinning. It was a long way to where the pile up was. It was like watching slow motion. A car would go into this spin and go spinning and sliding and crash into the other cars. It was far enough away where they eventually crashed that they lost most of thier speed. They would get out and get up on the bank and watch the next on come along and do the same thing. I don’t think anyone was hurt but it was quite the show.

I think it’s inappropriate, some of the comments here...

I’ve driven that stretch in the winter. It can be white knuckle time all the way from Portland to the Idaho line. I would say that virtually everyone who makes that trip takes it seriously...

I agree with you. The biggest problem is the State of Oregon and it’s inability to deal with snow and ice. They are counting on global warming, have been for years, but since it is not happening, every year people die on the roads that they do not take care of in winter conditions. Recently got out of the “green” state.

Very unfortunate, God bless all those killed and injured.

Of course when we get those folks off the roads and onto high speed rail their chances will be better.

Funny you mention Atlanta! I worked for Hertz RAC (VP Mktng) back in early-80s, and flew into Hartsfield Int’l from NY, and there was an ice/snowstorm just as we arrived. I very slowly drove out to Marietta (across from AFB) and saw scores of accidents along the route. Being from Midwest and PA, I knew how to drive in that mess; the ATL residents/visitors were going full-tilt-boogey into chain accidents on every hill and curve. What a frigging mess. Hertz, Avis, National and some other RACs lost use of entire fleets to fender-benders. Wonder if this was the same storm? LOL.
