Manchin introduces bill to ‘soften the landing’ if nation goes over ‘fiscal cliff’

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Sunday introduced a bill he said would “soften the landing” if the nation went over the “fiscal cliff.”

Manchin said his bill, the Cliff Alleviation at the Last Minute Act, — the CALM Act — would slowly phase in the tax rate increases and allow the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to propose substitute cuts to replace sequestration. Manchin’s proposal comes as lawmakers neared their year-end deadline to avoid January’s tax hikes and across-the-board cuts.

Bingo. The only one here facing a fiscal cliff is government itself. And Republicans will again line up to give their stamp of approval for another $2-3 trillion of newly printed money so that the Dems can win another election.

I think thats really off base. The cliff is great for big liberal government. Huge tax increases, huge cuts to defense. Obamacare untouched, medicare untouched, social security untouched. Obama and the dems don't want a deal because it is great for them. And if tanks the economy, they republicans will take the blame.

The easiest solution here is to remove the Senate from this process. I think they have no real function left now except to show up on TV or approve cabinet members....otherwise, they have zero value in government.

One step worse than the Cliff would be giving the White House Office of Management and Budget absolute control over where to cut. I hope this stupid proposal is as dead as any sensible proposals for massive cuts that have been killed by the big government liberals.

No, it's the worst thing that can happen to big liberal government. It forces them to live within their means.

Huge tax increases, huge cuts to defense. Obamacare untouched, medicare untouched, social security untouched.

Even with huge tax increases and huge cuts to defense, they still won't have enough money to pay for everything they want. They will have no choice but to cut entitlements. There simply is not a tax rate in existence that will bring in $4 trillion in revenue. It is not possible. And then every American will know beyond any doubt that there is no way to tax ourselves to prosperity. Government will fall apart, and the Dems will own it.

Obama and the dems don't want a deal because it is great for them.

The mistake you are making here is that your focus is on the wrong cliff. The ONLY cliff in existence here is the debt ceiling. And with that, there is no way possible that Obama and the Dems are going to allow that cliff to happen. The GOP House holds the ace here. If they actually do something Conservative for a change and refuse to raise the debt ceiling, then this Administration must cover a $1.1 trillion shortfall for the current fiscal year. And that simply is not possible.

If the Republicans cave, then Obama gets to fund everything with newly printed money while the rest of America has their own value stolen from them because of these newly printed dollars. Furthermore, the Dems have used these newly printed dollars to buy the last election. And they want to do it again for the next election.

Obama does NOT want to lose the ability to invent money for funding all of his social vote-buying programs. And sadly, the Republicans have helped him to do it so far. We'll see in the coming weeks whether they will double-down on STUPID again.

The stupids of W. Virginia elected Manchin knowing he’d be an obammy butt boy.

But the stupids of Florida elected Obama himself!
