Reaching Deals Is Hard. Here's Why
The Wall Street Journal ^ | December 31, 2012 | GERALD F. SEIB

Why is this so hard?

To many Americans, that is the question that hovered above the elusive search for a deficit-reduction deal that once again tied Washington in knots, despite a full year's advance warning that a deal was necessary.

Even when the contours of a possible big deal were possible to see weeks ago, the path to compromise—to say nothing of consensus—proved hard for the two parties to travel. Then, even when both sides lowered their sights to seek a more modest deal than the "grand bargain" once envisioned, the normal give-and-take of a negotiation, in which the two sides argue and then essentially split their differences, simply didn't seem possible.

Now there's a deal under discussion that would raise tax rates on income, capital gains, dividends and inheritances, while extending unemployment insurance and permanently addressing the creeping alternative minimum tax—designed three decades ago to ensure millionaires pay at least some tax, but which envelops millions of new households every year because it wasn't indexed for inflation.

If Congress doesn't act, the number of taxpayers hit by this levy in 2012 would rise from 4 million to 34 million. Yet the two sides are still arguing about what, if anything, to do with the scheduled spending cuts destined to begin Jan. 2.

Why? Cause nobody wants a deal. Not a single solitary elected official.

So we or the GOP have to deal with communists/democrats that want to raise taxes? Why should we or they surrender to evil?

Since the election ,All the media has been doing is talking about the their stupid “fiscal cliff “: the media did this whole massive propaganda campaign to force Republicans to make a deal to raise taxes on anyone be it millionaires anyone so they the media can suppress conservative voter turnout by saying “Republicans raised taxes.”. this is an attempt by the media to destroy the Republican party so there won’t be any opposition to Amnesty and gun control.

It’s not that no one wanted a deal. These things must go to the extreme limits of available time. Otherwise both sides supporters will decide their respective negotiators did not fight ‘hard enough’ or ‘long enough’.

Look at it this way. Suppose your boss sent you to negotiate something and told you that anything above a certain point, say 100, was great. Now, you walk into the negotiations and your counterparts opening offer is 110. What do you do? If you accept, then your boss will say that you accepted to little even though you exceeded his goal by 10%.

Your best course of action is to accept the offer, move to the nearest bar, and send periodically send your boss emails that you’ve encountered stiff resistance. It’s hand to hand combat, blood is knee deep in the negotiating room, but you will fight to the bitter end. Then, right before his desired schedule expires, you send him an email that you’ve got your opponent to offer 5% but you’re fighting for more. As the deadline expires, tell your boss you achieved 110 and are on your way home.

"The government is the outlaw, doing what it likes because it must resist all the “powerful interests,” the most powerful of them being the Middle Class.

The Revolution becomes permanent, with the Reds in power constantly rebelling against the bourgeois capitalists by raising taxes and outlawing soda.

Every year, the outlaws swing out of the trees, rob the merchants and ride back to Washington D.C. for a glorious feast over the stolen goods, which they may in some small way share with a few peasants, to secure their support."

Yeah, going over the cliff at midnight. No deal in sight. House doesn’t even plan to vote. The ‘Good Ole Boy’ Senate is to busy acting like a college frat party (year round). No vote tonight.

Pubbies already caved. Plus for years they have “kicked the can down the road” and the voting public has allowed them to do it.

There are no consequences to the Pubbies or the Dems cause ... they keep getting re-elected. They keep getting pay raises.

Why would they worry about anyone else. They got their deals and their deals keep paying dividends back top

A Circus of Thieves. A Circus of Clowns.

The word to yell at midnight ... BOHICA!

If your intention is to say that the political elite in Washington is out of touch with America and should be kicked out of office, I couldn’t agree more.

Good luck with that. . . .

At a company I once worked for the negotiator came back from the Middle East with a shiny new signed (and over budget) contract. . . . . .

The response was . . .

See that date under your signature . . .

That's your termination date.

Fire BONER and his backroom boys — all are a bunch of weak pansies. Weaklings. Cowards. They could not handle a real job, living with Obamacare....like the rest of us. A total scam, fraud and a farse. We are screwed.

It is very simple, so simple even kindergartners could understand it. We are very divided country - the most divided since CW I.

The RATS want to TRANSFORM the country and toss out the founding documents turning workers all into tax paying slaves while redistributing to the takers, and the GOP is making a feeble attempt at keeping our Constitutional basis which promised freedom and liberty based on hard work.

The disadvantages the conservatives have is the GOP has NO ONE that has the guts and the speech making ability to make the conservative hard work rewards case, AND the RATS own the Joseph Goebbels media machine.

What is not being reported is just as evil and sinister as that which is twisted and reported as "facts".

In defense of Boner, his plan “B” had the $1 Million threshold. Republicans in senate under leadership of McConnell are willing to accept $450k threshold.

SO who caved more? The senators, by far.

Not all rich work hard for their money. How about the Hollywood stars including actors, singers and the sports celebrities who make mega millions? Are they working harder than a carpenter, brick layer, dentist, doctor, auto-mechanic etc.?

SO long as we have huge entitlements, huge welfare etc. taxes are necessary. US has the highest disparity currently between non-discretionary spending and tax revenues compared to any industrialized country.

I favor less taxes. But to do that we have to cut entitlements first. Which politician is willing to lead?

@EagleUSA ... I agree. It boggles the mind to try and understand not only how Boehner got the job but kept it after the first 30 days. Take McConnell with him ... give Harry someone who’ll keep punching and knock him to the ropes.

@DougWayDuke ... Exactly!
