HOUSTON -- At the Light Bulb Depot near his home in The Heights, Randy Gingrich just bought another batch of florescent bulbs. Since I started three years ago, I havent replaced a compact fluorescent yet, he says. So Im happy with that. In my ceiling fans, each one of mine has four lights, says Allen Tabb, whos been selling light bulbs for 16 years. So instead of using 240 watts of electricity, I only use 60 watts of electricity. And I get the same light output. Sure, fluorescent bulbs are more expensive than old-fashioned incandescent bulbs and some people complain about losing a special glow in their homes. But in the long run, homeowners say theyre cheaper. Besides, pretty soon Americans wont have much choice. As the New Year arrives, new rules bring the nation closer to the end of the traditional incandescent light bulb. Energy efficiency legislation adopted by Congress and signed by former President George W. Bush in 2007 is gradually phasing out the standard bulbs that have illuminated American homes for more than a century. The new rules have applied to 100 watt bulbs since the beginning of 2012. In 2013, the restrictions have expanded to 75 watt bulbs. In January 2013, the new rules will apply to 60 and 40 watt bulbs.

Total bravo sierra. They do NOT last anywhere near as long as advertised. In fact I have found that they don’t last as long as incandescents. Just more progressive bullshit designed for control and profits for cronies.
That is correct. The CFLs won’t work with dimmers either. That is one reason we don’t use them.
As of today 75 watt incandescent bulbs will be phased out. It might take another two months for a place like Home Depot to deplete their supply. I plan on stocking up on some regular 75watt bulbs and some GE Reveal (full spectrum) 75 watt bulbs
Last year Jan first 2012 the 100 watt bulbs were phased out....Took two months for Home Depot to finish off the supply
This is reidiculous. Next thing you know the gubbmint will be telling us how much water our toilets will flush... oh wait.
They could still be used as weapons, I guess.
From the article:
Since I started three years ago, I havent replaced a compact fluorescent yet,
Well, aren’t you _special_ stick-boy. I haven’t had one of those last three years; not even close.
I know... I thought of the fact that we may have all these bulbs and not be able to use them.
I just put in several incandescent bulbs as temporary “pipe heaters”, during this cold spell. One 150 watt bulb and two 100s. We use heat tape in other places but the pipes are not accessible enough in these. A 250w heat lamp would be too much heat, but I may have to switch to those little 85w reptile enclosure heaters when the regular bulbs run out.
You can get CFLs that work on dimmers but you’ll pay a substantial premium for them.
Our landfill, run by the city, tells us to put the bulbs in a plastic shopping bag (we still have those) and throw it in the trash. The amount of hazardous material is laughably small when you are talking about burying it in the desert here. Four or five mg of Hg tops per bulb.
For output per watt cant beat LEDs problem is theyre expensive.
The price will come down. What concerns me is it won’t be low enough. I live in an area that is so bad people joke about the power failures. Our problem is “power failures” means surge-flicker-flicker-flicker-SURGE-off or some variaton that blows our electronic circuits sooner or later.
Since LED lights will have circuitry in ‘em (at the very least step-down to 5VDC) I’d be replacing them after a few power “outages.”
Compact fluorescent bulbs die very quickly in a cold climate.
Yea power interru[tions that is a problem but its also the same with CFLs...
I’ve bought some warm ‘generic’ ones. You can tell that they don’t all have the same warmer color so they sold them without the label. But while expensive, I do like them better than the CFLs. The prices have been coming down, so that’s good.
Regardless, I’m still anti-ban.
Yes, but that is why we hoarded the incandescents for the past few years. I also use 100w incandescents to keep plants from freezing.
“Isnt it though? (scam)”
HAPPY NEW YEAR THO!
I have only one on a ceiling fan and it burns out every few months. I could have bought a new ceiling fan for what those CFLs ended up costing.
Yea power interru[tions that is a problem but its also the same with CFLs...
That also. What scares the **** out of me is almost every CFL I replaced (I’m off them for now/for good) had burn marks on them. It varied from slightly brown to one that the plastic actually bubbled a bit.
Can you say “firestarter?”
