Total bravo sierra. They do NOT last anywhere near as long as advertised. In fact I have found that they don’t last as long as incandescents. Just more progressive bullshit designed for control and profits for cronies.

That is correct. The CFLs won’t work with dimmers either. That is one reason we don’t use them.

As of today 75 watt incandescent bulbs will be phased out. It might take another two months for a place like Home Depot to deplete their supply. I plan on stocking up on some regular 75watt bulbs and some GE Reveal (full spectrum) 75 watt bulbs
Last year Jan first 2012 the 100 watt bulbs were phased out....Took two months for Home Depot to finish off the supply

we bought up a supply of 100 watts last year. Guess we will need to do the same with 75 watts. this is getting rediculous!

I'd be more willing to consider buying hundreds of light bulbs if I was certain that we'll continue to have a supply of electricity or gas to power generators.
They could still be used as weapons, I guess.

What a bunch of crap dumped on us.
Have three incandescent flood lights on the back of my house, one went out so I decided to try an equivalent fluorescent replacement.
The apparent brightness and illumination, direct and spread out, is significantly less with the fluorescent when compared with the incandescent sitting side by side.
Warm up time is also crap.
And yes, I know all the formulas and test that determine brightness, lumens, etc, etc.
To my eyes, theres just less brightness regardless of whats stamped on the box.

From the article:
Since I started three years ago, I havent replaced a compact fluorescent yet,
Well, aren’t you _special_ stick-boy. I haven’t had one of those last three years; not even close.

I know... I thought of the fact that we may have all these bulbs and not be able to use them.

I just put in several incandescent bulbs as temporary “pipe heaters”, during this cold spell. One 150 watt bulb and two 100s. We use heat tape in other places but the pipes are not accessible enough in these. A 250w heat lamp would be too much heat, but I may have to switch to those little 85w reptile enclosure heaters when the regular bulbs run out.

You can get CFLs that work on dimmers but you’ll pay a substantial premium for them.

Are you saying you are throwing them in the trash? What about the mercury? Our landfill, run by the city, tells us to put the bulbs in a plastic shopping bag (we still have those) and throw it in the trash. The amount of hazardous material is laughably small when you are talking about burying it in the desert here. Four or five mg of Hg tops per bulb.

For output per watt cant beat LEDs problem is theyre expensive.
The price will come down. What concerns me is it won’t be low enough. I live in an area that is so bad people joke about the power failures. Our problem is “power failures” means surge-flicker-flicker-flicker-SURGE-off or some variaton that blows our electronic circuits sooner or later.
Since LED lights will have circuitry in ‘em (at the very least step-down to 5VDC) I’d be replacing them after a few power “outages.”

Compact fluorescent bulbs die very quickly in a cold climate.

I’ve bought some warm ‘generic’ ones. You can tell that they don’t all have the same warmer color so they sold them without the label. But while expensive, I do like them better than the CFLs. The prices have been coming down, so that’s good.
Regardless, I’m still anti-ban.

It is. And it’s just ‘beyond’ me as to why we cannot muster the gumption to stop the lunacy before us. To me, this is not as much about the light bulb as it is a failure of the human condition. I loathe sounding so negative, but one cannot HELP but notice the speed at which we are falling into the downward spiral (that we have created for ourselves).
HAPPY NEW YEAR THO!

I have only one on a ceiling fan and it burns out every few months. I could have bought a new ceiling fan for what those CFLs ended up costing.

That also. What scares the **** out of me is almost every CFL I replaced (I’m off them for now/for good) had burn marks on them. It varied from slightly brown to one that the plastic actually bubbled a bit.
Can you say “firestarter?”
