The House of Representatives late Tuesday easily approved emergency bipartisan legislation sparing all but a sliver of Americas richest from sharp income tax hikes -- while setting up another fiscal cliff confrontation in a matter of weeks.
Lawmakers voted 257-167 to send the compromise to President Barack Obama to sign into law. Eighty-five Republicans and 172 Democrats backed the bill, which had sailed through the Senate by a lopsided 89-8 margin shortly after 2 a.m. Opposition comprised 151 Republicans and 16 Democrats.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner voted in favor of the deal, as did House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, his party's failed vice presidential candidate. But Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy voted against it.
“Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.”
“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
We had a nice run.
“the death knell of the republican party”
Yes, the Leadership’s decision to sacrifce the conservatives in the caucus to the RINOs is inexplicable. Democrats will sweep the 2014 elections when Rs are “primaried” and “third-partied”.
Bill has passed
The turkey’s passed it.
Speaker Pelosi in 2014 is as the news media intended
the news media created this “fiscal cliff” BS to get a democrast House so they can get gun control and Amnesty and who knows what other horror
I left the GOP when Bush Sr. was President. I’m a strict Constitution guy. I’m also part of the Texas Nationalist movement. I’m ready for a new Republic. :)
House passes senate fiscal cliff bill.
Well, maybe in 2016 we can fix this at the ballot box /S
And a whole lot of R’s waited to vote nay until it passed... Unprincipled idiots.
“This very likely is the death knell of the republican party.”
We should be so lucky. More than likely, the gop will continue on as a sort of zombie political party for several years. Just long enough to make it extremely difficult for conservatives to organize a viable alternative.
But then again, deceiving and screwing conservatives is the gop’s reason for existing anyway, so this is nothing new.
You’re so lucky to live in Texas. As soon as you guys decide to secede, I’m moving down there to help y’all.
Approximately 1/3 of the Republicans vote Y. 85 traitorous Republicans that must be replaced in 2014.
RINOs Gone Wild. Bronco made us do it they say. What a sad bunch of cowards. History will damn them.
But these tax cuts AREN’T permanent. obama has already said he will want more tax increases if the GOP wants spending cuts.
Sad to say, but we actually fared better when Pelosi was Speaker than we have with Boehner.
