House ends current term without voting on Sandy aid bill

New York area-lawmakers in both parties erupted in anger late Tuesday night after learning the House Republican leadership decided to allow the current term of Congress to end without holding a vote on aid for victims of Superstorm Sandy. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said he was told by the office of Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia that Speaker John Boehner of Ohio had decided to abandon a vote this session. Cantor, who sets the House schedule, did not immediately comment. House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland told reporters that just before Tuesday evening's vote on "fiscal cliff" legislation, Cantor told him that he was "99.9 percent confident that this bill would be on the floor, and that's what he wanted." A spokesman for Boehner, Michael Steel said, "The speaker is committed to getting this bill passed this month." In remarks on the House floor, King called the decision "absolutely inexcusable, absolutely indefensible. We cannot just walk away from our responsibilities."

They voted for enough Democrat pork with the “fiscal cliff” bill.

With the new congress perhaps Sandy aid can be passed without all the billions going to Chuckie Shummer’s cronies.

Gee, yes, lets blame the R’s.....
I have no use for the leadership BUT unless this is just another opportunity to ‘bash the R’s’, why didn’t BO (he made the direct promises), joebama, Reid and McConnell whip up some more magic and let the House vote on it?

Why worry about protocol and procedure at this late date?

Maybe we can just blame Bush.

Or just bypass the House altogether.

Saw a little blurb the other day that this ‘Cliff’ has been looming for 13 months, yet “THEY” have only met something like 10 or 15 days in the last 4 months?

Rush used to say “shut it down, it will save us money, but this BO machine has found a way around that”.

Are you kidding? In NY and NJ nothing happens without undeserving people getting the bulk of the money.

Part of the debt ceiling debate... ok we will pay for recovery but you must cut the spending from somewhere else.

We cannot just walk away from our responsibilities.

We are so far removed from what the true role of the federal government is (as defined in the constitution) that most people no longer realize that congress has no role in providing relief from natural disasters.

IamConservative is correct here. The government should not take money from one person to give to another, no matter how needy the other person is. That is how we got into this mess in the first place! Charity is only charity if it is voluntary.

BTW, the bill that would give money to Hurricane Sandy victims was loaded with pork, including millions to Alaska fisheries. Even the money designated to the hurricane victims will no doubt we wasted and/or lost to fraud. Government is the least efficient way to help people.

We don’t have any money to give. The government is broke. We are saddling our children and grandchildren with debt for things we think would be “nice” to do.
