Grocery price stickers no longer mandatory next week (MA)
WWLP ^

Individual price stickers on groceries may disappear in the new year.

A new state law allows shop owners to place price scanners throughout their store as an alternative to having individual tags on each item. Many larger stores already have such scanners.

It is designed to be a cost saving measure, but it has some disadvantages for customers. Some consumer advocates also argue that scanners can be unreliable.

Mary Ann Spencer of Springfield told 22News that the change is not good for her.

"It would be more difficult for me because I am handicapped, and so if I had to run back and forth with an item to see how much it's going to cost, it would take me an awful long time to do my shopping,” she said.

Before the new law was passed, Massachusetts was the last state in the country to require individual price stickers on each item. Retailers are still required to have product prices marked in store aisles.

How has the rest of the country managed by just reading the stickers on the shelf. The horrors about to befall MA grocery shoppers.

So, I guess being handicapped means she's too stupid to look at the price tag on the shelf...

hum? Really, there is not one thing I buy at the grocery that is individually priced but “wait for it”, there is a price on the shelf right by the product.
Good lord, some people are sooooo helpless.

Side by side comparison shopping? Hell, we don’t need that in Mass. People here have lots of money. What’s a few dollars per grocery store trip? No problem.

Another reason I can not imagine living in Mass.

How about this idea? I know it’s crazy. But, how about the stores do what they want, and the customers choose to go to the stores that do what they want, and stay away from the stores that don’t do what they want?

“Good lord, some people are sooooo helpless.”

You have to understand that here in the People’s Republic, our economy depends on helplessness. We have a whole state bureacracy dedicated to helplessness. We have a whole private helplessness industry to deal with the state helplessness bureacracy.

Massachusetts, where helplessness is nobody’s fault and everybody’s business!

I shop looking at the shelf labels and the ‘price per ounce’ amounts constantly. I do shelf side-by-side comparisons everyday.

I don’t want this change.

The shelf stickers with the unit price stay. They no longer have to place a sticker of every can of corn, box of pasta, etc.
