Zero hedge ^

Thirty years ago, the USSR was better known as the "Evil Empire." Fast forward to today, when its successor Russia, is apparently the "Tax Free Empire", and less socialist than France, at least to infamous millionaire expatriate Gérard Depardieu, who as reported previously has paid €145 million in taxes over 45 years, and who demonstratively decided to give up his French passport in the wake of France's socialist 75% millionaire tax (subsequently ruled unconstitutional), and as of today, has just been granted Russian citizenship.

Useful idiot? The left just doesn’t get it. High taxes always causes emigration of the rich.

A Frenchman emigrates to Russia in search of economic liberty.

Pravda urges Americans not to give up their gun rights.

The former communist nations are becoming more capitalistic at least as quickly as the G7 countries are going socialist. Russian income tax rates are lower than US income tax rates.

Yes, they just screwed thousands of orphans by preventing Americans from adopting them.

I’m unsure that running from a socialist, confiscatory France to.... a pseudo-fascist-pseudo-socialist, confiscatory Russia is the answer to his problems?

Time will tell.

One thing is for sure, Russia has already paid the piper, Western Europe is beginning to pay now, and in a decade the US will pay, like it or not.

I agree with you. If Russia is the land of opportunity, then why is NYC overrun with Russians these days? They have descended like locusts - only without the charm. Bon vivant Depardieu should stay in Belgium!

A ‘useful idiot’ to be used by Putin for propoganda.

No matter how low personal income taxes are in Russia, do you think for one second one’s wealth/land/livelihood can’t be claimed in a flash by the Russian State, however specious the reason?

I think that it is interesting that the story revolves around someone whose name could be construed similarly to “Ichabod”. Depardieu could literally mean “God leaves”, just like Ichabod means “the glory of God is departed”.

The Return of Martin Guerre was a great movie and more power to Gérard Depardieu whatever it takes. I would do the same thing to avoid onerous taxation

Go to Russia, Belgium what suits you best and lose 100lbs or only your heirs will benefit. Good luck!

Why do they use the term “comrade” when these days, we are more Communist than the Russians are?
