An Upstate school district has gotten a complaint from a national organization that's upset about the way the district opens their meetings.
The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter of complaint to the School District of Pickens County after someone complained to the organization.
For as long as anyone with the School District of Pickens County can remember, an invocation has been a part of each meeting, led by students from different schools.
SDPC spokesman John Eby said, "If we felt like it was violating the constitution, we wouldn't be doing it."
He said there haven't been any complaints about the way the district starts the meetings until now.
The letter was sent to the board asking it "take immediate action and refrain from scheduling prayers" in the future.
The organization's staff attorney, Patrick Elliott, told News 4 by phone that it's "a serious constitutional violation."
"They shouldn't be instituting religious rituals at their meetings,” Elliott said. “Certainly, people can practice their religion, pray, and do all that on their own time, but as a matter of school business, these prayers are inappropriate and unconstitutional."

I’m interested in who’s funding them and info on members.
These people are imposing their religion, atheism, on the rest of us.
It's time for this to stop.
I am pretty sure they have people search out organizations that pray and go after them. My bet the “complainer” was not a local. Sometimes I wish Christians were more radical. I am tired of always backing down.
When are we going to start telling organizations like this to stick it where the sun don’t shine? When are we going to stand up to tyranny?
Fortitude is lacking by many in this country.

The FRF needs to receive a few very non-Christian type responses.
Folks need to quit caving to this intimidation, in VERY strong language.

Exactly. Just ignore them. Are they gonna start jailing people for praying? Of course, it will probably come to that. End times.

Susan Jacoby, bestselling author of Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism, and program director of the Center for Inquiry-New York City, told FFRF convention-goers in 2004: “[President] Kennedy had to speak about his religion because he was suspected of insufficient dedication to the Constitution’s separation of church and state. Today’s candidates are suspect if they display too much dedication to secular government.”
