Barack Obama’s $7 million Hawaii vacation is an insult to America’s struggling middle class
The Telegraph ^ | 01/06/2013 | Nile Gardiner

$16.4 trillion – that’s the latest figure for America’s massive national debt. Nearly $6 trillion of this debt was racked up in the first term of the Obama presidency – a 50 percent increase. It is horrifying to imagine what the debt will be when Obama leaves the White House in 2016, unless Congress has the willpower to stand in the way.

Meanwhile, as the world’s superpower is literally drowning in debt, President Obama is basking in the warmth of the beaches of Hawaii, at an exclusive resort way beyond the financial reach of most Americans. The president pays the cost of his own family’s accommodations, but there are a large number of associated costs which are paid from the public purse.

What is the actual cost of Obama’s lavish vacation to the American taxpayer? A staggering $7 million, according to veteran White House reporter Keith Koffler, who wrote in his blog earlier this week:

In a move that is rich in irony, President Obama agreed Tuesday night to sign an emergency deficit reduction bill that does almost nothing to rein in spending and then jetted out to Hawaii to resume his vacation at an extra cost of more than $3 million to taxpayers.

The price tag is in addition to more than $4 million that is already being spent on the Obamas’ Hawaii idyll, bringing the total cost of the excursion to well over $7 million.

The added cost was incurred because by the time the Obamas return from Hawaii – whenever that is – the president will have used Air Force One to travel to Honolulu and back twice.

I did give you a break. I could have said you sound like an idiot. But I didn't say that because I was giving you a break. You're welcome.

I bet you go around saying "The proof is in the pudding" too, don't you? That would also demonstrate your ignorance of the English language, your willingness to mindless repeat phrases you hear without bothering to decode them.

I'm not calling you an ignorant moron, I'm just saying that you sound like one when you say, "could care less."

OMG! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised if he was nominated.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been saying this for awhile - it has to be massive.

Pop Culture President. Instead of a Republic we now have MOB rule and a KING/Queen.

HI to DC is a *very long* trip. It’s the equivalent of *two* transcontinental flights.

The price quoted was $180,000 PER HOUR. The distance doesn't explain the hourly rate.

One thing that might be part of the cost is extra maintenance on Air Force One. But that still shouldn't add up to millions per trip.

They probably need some extra planes to carry vehicles for the presidential motorcade, and perhaps a fighter jet escort.

I also say KMA once in a while.

Have you ever thought about writing a response to what is written once in a while instead of playing grade school English teacher?

Hey, if you want to help the liberals by participating in the debasement of the language, be my guest. But you’re bound to hear about what you’re doing once in a while, and it was just my turn. If you say something, try to make sure it makes some sense is all I’m trying to get across here. It beats mindlessly repeating phrases you hear. It also demonstrates your intelligence and comprehension abilities without having to add a word.

I understand it take a whole cargo plane capable of hauling a tank just to carry the Presidential limousine around.

Oh, BTW, I forgot to mention: Since I know what "KMA" means, I'm A-OK with your saying that to me. You can insult me all you want, but it's insults to my intelligence that cheese me off.

This was so that Barry could come back to D.C. sans the Wookie and have a few days R&R as the sodomite that we all know he is. Sign a bill....no....time to get queer with his lover.

I have a question other than how Zero’s getting jiggy with his B/F...how is a robo-signature legal for a law? That’s what he did.

I'm not demanding Mensa-like skills (for the record, I am not a Mensan. May qualify, I just don't care), but I do prefer thought-out comments, as opposed to mindless repetition of phrases heard in the popular culture. I also think you're not standing on firm intellectual ground when you get defensive after you're called on it.

Think about it: You are fighting with me for the right to sound stupid.

You are just as free to ignore my posts as well. I have no right to force you to listen to what I have to say.

They could have sent the bill FedEx next day and it would have been there at 10:30. Signed and FedEx it back 2 day.

Done.

I don’t think that a robo-signature is legal.

I don’t think that a robo-signature is legal.

For what it's worth, the U.S. Attorney General gave George W. Bush an opinion in July 2005 that the autopen could be used to sign legislation.

The opinion is titled Whether The President May Sign A Bill By Directing That His Signature Be Attached To It.

However, GW Bush never used the autopen to sign legislation. Obama is the first President to do that.

Congress should specifically approve each time the Air Force One has to make a trip. A trip to a foreign country to bolster our relations, then that would be justified. But a trip for pleasure in Hawaii? The President should pay for that out of pocket.

Not fair? Well, that's what Camp David is for? A Presidential Retreat.
