Time to toot horn for George H.W. Bush
CNN ^ | December 31, 2012 | David Frum

(CNN) -- George H.W. Bush marked his 80th and 85th birthdays with parachute jumps. He said after the second jump: "Just because you're an old guy, you don't have to sit around drooling in the corner. Get out and do something. Get out and enjoy life."

Now 88, Bush has been struggling with serious health concerns, including bronchitis. We need him to recover, to set an example for the world of how a man can mark his 90th.

The son of a U.S. senator, Bush has been a naval aviator hero, oil millionaire, member of Congress, ambassador to China, CIA director, vice president of the United States and then the president who managed the end of the Cold War. He has lived more life than seems possible for any single human being.

The achievements of that remarkable life are overshadowed by one negative fact: Along with Herbert Hoover and Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush is only one of three 20th-century presidents to have lost re-election. Yet while Hoover's presidency and Carter's are largely regarded as failures by posterity, the judgment on Bush's has become more forgiving over time.

Eighteen months ago, former President Bill Clinton paid this tribute to his predecessor in office:

That was >20 years ago he was POTUS, my this country has turned to crap since then.

Clinton at least had to appeal to white voters, Obama doesnt.

And the world economy was such that he couldn’t run endless debts and expect re-election, high interest rates and inflation would have killed that.

The Bushes STINK.

Bush I betrayed the Reagan Revolution and, after cleaning Saddam’s clock, failed to finish him off and left the cost to a later generation at a much greater expense, not to mention leaving the Kurds to his tender mercies.

The LAST great President we had was Reagan, after him, each one was worse than the jerk in office before him.

RE “The Bushes STINK.”

Nooo, you kidding?

Maybe that's why you are on my old anti-Bush ping lists I used regularly in 2009, 2010, to torment the Bush-bots.

I will give pa-pa more slack than sonny though, GWB had his own congress yet the Koolaid squad still made up excuses for him.

It was all Barney Fwank and Chris Dodd and Clinton's fault, they blocked everything, or they forced HIM to promote those policies by calling him a racist. HE KEPT YOU SAFE GAD DUMMIT so SHUT UP“

LOL, remember those protected Bush worship dose threads?

Obama still has to appeal to whites...it’s just that there are more liberals and/or brainwashed-by-the-media ones now.

George the elder was a good man, but whenever a squish (or really just a standard-issue lib) like Frum makes a special point to go gaga over him, it’s a preface for trashing present-day conservatives. His type always likes Republicans except when they’re in power.

There is an over abundance of anger and nastiness in almost every posting on FR. It seems that there is a race on to see who can be the nastiest.

Sorry. I just get really aggravated when I see the mess created by most of our political leaders and their abject abandonment and betrayal of traditional American virtues and values for fame, power and personal aggrandizement.

“The achievements of that remarkable life are overshadowed by one negative fact:”

1. First and foremost negative FACT: “Mark my word, no new taxes.”

2. Bought off failed to take Iraq oil fields.

3. As the result of #1, lost to Clinton, and brought on the banking scams, and thus the repeal of Glass-Steigel.

“Mark my word, no new taxes.” “Read my lips. No new Taxes.” Those words were written by speech writer Peggy Noonan, and delivered in the New Orleans Superdome by the nominee for President, George H. W. Bush. I stood no more than thirty feet away when he spoke those words.

The truth is that governing is a lot more complicated than campaigning. I’m 75 years old and have been exposed to a lot of presidents. None of them were perfect.
