Cocooning Is the Wrong Solution for Conservatives
The American Thinker ^ | James G. Wiles

Posted on 01/06/2013 11:44:14 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

.......... the United States needs its conservative leaders and activists in the public square now more than at any time in our lifetimes. If we hold on, we'll win. Blue State America is doomed, and the blue-staters represented by President Obama and his party cannot save it.

...... we red-staters must remain fully involved and fully engaged in American politics and culture.

This is especially true after a year like 2012 -- when we lose. Better to quote U.S. General Joseph Stilwell after the loss of Burma to the Japanese. "I claim," Vinegar Joe said, "we took a hell of beating[.] ... [I]t is as humiliating as hell. We need to find out what caused it, go back and re-take it."

The biggest mistake we can make is to stay in our own echo chamber and to talk only to each other. There was already too much of that in 2012......

....... We need to read -- and refute with facts -- the other side's stuff as well.

And engage with it.

Facts are bullets in the war of ideas. And to find facts, we have to look everywhere for them -- not just our own outlets. Winning the 2014 elections and beyond means we have to recruit and proselytize young and/or disaffected or unregistered voters.

It is necessary to go out and engage the culture. Join Democratic FB pages. Visit Progressive websites. Proselytize and organize, registering conservative voters, recruiting conservative candidates, joining in canvassing and GOTV efforts. If you live in a safe red state, go volunteer or donate in an adjoining blue state.

If you live and work in a blue state, fly your colors proudly. Every day......

Above all, let us project confidence. Take joy in the battle. And finally, let us prepare diligently for next time.....

you fall for GOP-e propaganda when you think the Conservatives left. They didn’t leave. However, a good 50 million Republican oriented potential voters aren’t signing up ~

I had seen this earlier today, and I think that there can be several notions of cocooning. I think perhaps the best way to fight is to cocoon what you can, to preserve your property, which will allow you to be in a better position to try and save America.

Then there is the thought that America is an ideal, and not a piece of real estate, so many PATRIOTS are becoming EX PATRIATES. Some will try and “find” America’s opportunity somewhere else, and some will try and fight for America from the safety of being abroad. A lot of ways to fight, and cocooning is not necessarily the same thing as dropping out.

Glad you called out that foolishness. Liberals are always funny when they try and position themselves on the side of the Bible in these debates....

First, people such as yourself (leftists) don't ever actually reduce inequality, you simply try to change who is unequal (four legs good, two legs better), while pretending you're doing something. Inequality has risen more in the past four years than any other time, and who has been in control, hmmmmmm?

That you think this administration is progressive or even slightly left of center shows how far to the right you've gone when you can't even discern the middle any longer.

And progressive policies have been empirically shown to reduce inequality and increase economic growth, see Scandinavian countries.

Second, survey after survey, poll after poll, shows conservatives actually give money and time and help to the poor, while leftists vote and pretend to stand with them, while actually not giving to them (see: Tax returns of AlGore, John Kerry, and John Edwards). Once again: Congrats. Pretending you side with one of Jesus' sayings, while your opponents are rich young rulers: Priceless (and yes, transparently silly and totally false, reversing what is actually true).

Lol that you think those guys are leftists. :snicker:

Not true. The Republican Party will never admit the conservatives left. This thread of full of conservatives who left that party and I am also one of them as I don’t vote for liberals.

Glad you called out that foolishness.

So you think that there have been no market and political failures that need dealing with?

Oh boy, where do I start?

I didn't say anything in my post about economics. Given the right context, I'd say some pretty strong things to modern-day Republican equivalents of the “Rich Young Ruler,” many of whom are RINOs who love their money more than their Lord or their Constitution, and who belong to “big steeple” churches mostly for the social prestige and access to money-making opportunities that belonging to the big downtown or big suburban “First Church” gives them.

If you want to know my views on helping poor people better their condition, you probably ought to know that I have served in inner-city ministry and have lived in areas where many conservatives would be afraid to live. Frankly, I wouldn't live in several of those areas today now that I am married with a family to be concerned about. I've got more in common with Marvin Olasky (though I don't agree with him on everything) than I do with some of the hard-right secular conservatives.

You're part of the Class of 1998 on Free Republic. If you are the Iowa OPC member who I think you are (don't tell if you don't want to), we've debated repeatedly on other boards. You won't hear me focusing on economic issues here on Free Republic but rather on social conservative issues, even if that makes me a bit “out of step” at times with some secular Freepers.

My response is that's fine. We all understand there are economic conservatives, social conservatives, and military conservatives; I happen to affirm all three positions but my passion is on social conservative issues.

Those social conservative issues include the biblical belief in private property, work ethics, Romans 13, and similar positions. Being a social conservative doesn't divorce me from economic and military conservative positions, but those issues aren't where I choose to focus. I'll leave that focus for others.

Thanks, Onyx!

I took one look at that article on Hildy Angius and said, “Why don't we all know more about her?”

Time will tell. Supervisor Angius needs to prove herself on the local level. For now, at an absolute minimum, it looks like she's a perfect example of what happens when conservatives work their tails off locally and stop being defeatists who give up for no good reason.

If she does well in Navaho County, I think taking a Jewish conservative female Republican and sticking that in the craw of left-wing feminist Democrats at a higher level could work just as well as shoving Alan West down the throat of left-wing Democrats from another part of the traditional Democratic constituency.

I suspect we'll be hearing a lot more about Angius if she succeeds on the Navaho County Board of Supervisors.

ksen is a leftist, he may be a class of 1998 sign up, but he is a doctrinaire leftist democrat (who somehow magically thinks he's a moderate, as they all do, *poof, I'm a moderate*.....because I say so....).

I'm not the Iowa OPC member you thought I was. I don't know who that is. But judging by your post you seem like someone who would actually engage in a conversation about these issues instead of just responding in knee-jerk fashion "Leftist! Communist!"

Also I'm glad of your work in inner-city ministry. I hope that you are still able to find a way to invest your time with a family to worry about now.

I do focus on economic issues because I believe that those are at the root of so many of the social problems we are seeing. And as more and more of the income and wealth get concentrated at the top the more social problems you will see pop up in society as people start to feel more and more helpless and desperate.

Anyway, carry on with your good work!

Their have been no market failures except in those markets perverted by the intrusion of government.

Markets are pure. By definition, they cannot fail, unless tampered with.

Their have been no market failures except in those markets perverted by the intrusion of government.

While many market failures have political roots there are also many that happen with no government involvement whatsoever, i.e. Microsoft and the Ford Pinto.

Markets are pure. By definition, they cannot fail, unless tampered with.

Only in Chicago school fantasy land. Even Adam Smith recognized that markets weren't pure and that market players would work to unfairly weigh things to their advantage.

Thanks, Ksen.

To understand where I'm coming from, read the Heidelberg Catechism. Then read Olasky, Schaeffer and Kuyper.

That doesn't put me squarely in the modern American conservative Christian camp. There are differences. Some of them are important differences.

But I'd rather work with people who share 80 or 90 percent of my views than yell about the remaining 20 to 10 percent. Maybe that comes from growing up in a Republican Party household where the goal was to win elections by convincing at least 50-percent-plus-one of the voters, not to be the purest people on the block.

Churches have a bad tendency to split over secondary issues. Secondary issues are important, and we shouldn't forget them, but let's keep the focus on the primary mission.

That principle applies even more strongly to secular politics.

Ah, so you actually believe this administration is not leftist......

Definition of delusional: Delusional (adjective) means suffering from or characterized by delusions (a false belief or opinion).

Does this mean you believe you're to the left of "moderate" Barack O'Bambi?
