Pelosi: More tax revenues must be part of next deficit deal
The Hill ^ | 1/06/13 | Mike Lillis

Posted on 01/07/2013 2:29:19 AM PST by Libloather

Pushing back against the Republicans' deficit-reduction strategy, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this weekend that more tax revenues – not just spending cuts – must be a part of Congress's effort to rein in deficits.

Pelosi said the tax hikes in the recent “fiscal-cliff” deal are a start, but don't go far enough to generate the revenues the government needs to run the country effectively.

"In this legislation we had $620 billion, very significant … changing the high-end tax rate to 39.6 percent. But that is not enough on the revenue side," Pelosi told CBS's Bob Schieffer in an interview taped Friday.

Without offering many specifics, the California Democrat said she wants to scour the tax code for unnecessary loopholes and "unfair" benefits that help those – either companies or individuals – who don't need it.

"Put it all on the table and see what is working," she said. "Frankly, I'm fairly agnostic about what it could be. … But, you know, if it works for us, if it grows our economy, if it's something that justifies its existence, it should be there."

The remarks are just the latest salvo from Democrats ahead of three major fiscal issues – the debt ceiling, sequestration and funding the government – that Congress must tackle over the next 90 days.

To reduce deficits, President Obama and the Democrats want a balanced package that combines entitlement reform with spending cuts and new tax revenues. Republicans, however, are rejecting the notion that new taxes should be a part of the process. They say the tax hikes included in the just-passed fiscal-cliff bill are plenty. Now they want to focus on cutting spending.

"The tax issue is finished, over, completed. That's behind us," McConnell said Sunday in an interview with ABC's "This Week" program. "Now the question is, what are we going to do about the biggest problem confronting our country and our future? And that's our spending addiction."

Many Republicans see the looming debt-ceiling fight as their best chance to win major cuts from the Democrats – a battle President Obama has said he won't enter and Pelosi warned against on Friday.

"Right now we have to pay the bills that have been incurred," she said. "And if you want to say cut spending for what we do next, fine. But don't… tie it to the debt ceiling."

On entitlements, Pelosi drew a line against raising Medicare's eligibility age or cutting Social Security benefits. But she left the door open to additional means testing under Medicare.

"I think you and I could probably afford to pay a little more for a deductible or a co-pay or something like that," she told Schieffer.

Pelosi also took a few shots at Republicans, blaming the rightward shift of their party for the partisanship in Washington's current political environment. She said the GOP is now "dominated by an element that are anti-government ideologues" who are "committed to not cooperating with this president."

"It didn't used to be this way," she said. "I keep saying to my Republican friends, take back your party. This isn't the Grand Old Party that did so many things for America, that commanded so much respect. We need a strong Republican Party. This is really the over-the-edge crowd. That's the way I see it."

Here is what Pelosi doesn't talk about: if you really need more tax revenue, you need to put more taxpayers to work. The Democrats have been working to produce fewer taxpayers, or reducing the income of existing taxpayers, with their Obamacare money-grab and runaway regulations. You don't need to raise rates. You don't need to slash deductions. You need to get people back to work.

Getting people back to work also helps cut spending.

That is not their goal. They LOVE the takers. Love um to pieces.

They want a nanny state.

They want to punish the rest of us. For now they are using the tax code. Once they get our guns. Who knows what they will do.

I like that! You are exactly right. Every dollar left in the free market works twice. Once as earned (in jobs), and again as the job has removed someone from dependence on government.

In fact, it’s so obvious, when you think about it, that it really puts the lie to every utterance from Pelosi’s pie-hole. She has other things in mind that she’s not telling us.

Have you noticed an underlying theme with pelosi and obama (when he is unguarded) is to talk about finding ways for govt to take money that the people don’t “need”?

I wonder how much of pelosi’s family fortune she doesnt “need”, and how of the obama family fortune moochelle and barry don’t “need”

McConnell and Boehner are sorry sacks of crap. To allow the Dems to control the language used to describe taxes is traitorous.

Revenue is a term to describe money taken in by a company or business in exchange for work, service, or product delivered.

In this case there is no other term than tax. Use confiscatory tax if you so choose.

When you shrink the economy like they and 0bummer have, their, “revenue” goes down but they keep raising the tax rates.

Why is it so hard for Boehner to explain this to the American people? Unless he really simply agrees with Dems.

“Put it all on the table and see what is working,” she said. “Frankly, I’m fairly agnostic about what it could be. … But, you know, if it works for us, if it grows our economy, if it’s something that justifies its existence, it should be there.”

Wow! First, notice how everything is “It” so she can redefine at will if she is ever questioned abour her own words.

But more importantly, noting that “it” in all of these instances refers to taxes or “government revenue”, she says “if it works for us, if it grows our economy”. This is the democraps total definition of the economy...whatever we want to spend on whatever we want to spend it will grow the economy, not, of course, that taking away from producers will shrink the economy.

This is the same “person” who thinks that government giving someone welfare is the best form of stimulus to grow the economy, not getting that person a job which pays more than welfare.

Freepers - Mock their positions to their faces.

Please sign and promote the White House Petition:

Produce a Trillion Dollar Coin for Every U.S. Citizen for the Purpose of Paying Taxes

Activities and services pledged by the U.S. government exceed the ability to pay based on current tax revenue. The budget deficit is added to the national debt, and federal taxes are used in part to pay for the debt and interest.

“Trillion dollar” coins are being considered to pay the national debt, however, we petition the U.S. Government to mint an adequate quantity of “trillion dollar” coins to pay off the national debt, and enough additional coins to provide one for each citizen of the United States.

These coins can only be used to pay federal, state, and miscellaneous taxes for the lifetime of the recipient. Residual funds from each coin will be available to heirs of the recipients, and will be exempt from inheritance tax.

so a 60/40 split isn’t good enough? This is ridiculous. That’s just at the federal level. If you add the state level income tax and property tax we are talking absolutely criminal. It’s probably more than 50% in some cases. Federal taxes should be about 15% (may still be too high as I just threw up a number for discussion purposes) or so to pay for military and defense, immigration and cross state infrastructure (i.e roads and even internet could be done) everything else should be cut out (unless I missed some enumerated powers). Medicare, Medicaid, SS, department of education, energy (unless it falls under cross state infrastructure), commerce, agriculture, EPA and on and on down the line. Someone tell me why I’m wrong.

We can shut down another money-wasting agency on Wednesday...and Thursday...and Friday...and every day for the remainder of the year.
