A task force led by vice-president Joe Biden is reportedly considering wide-ranging proposals going well beyond simply reinstating a ban on assault weapons and high capacity ammunition.
The Washington Post reports that a national data base tracking gun sales, mental health checks, and background checks are all on the table.
And in a move that is set to anger opponents of gun control, the taskforce is reportedly looking at measures that can be implemented by the president's order without the approval of Congress.
The White House is understood to want swift action while the public remains outraged over the deaths of 20 children and six adults in the Newtown school shooting in Connecticut last month.
Some reports suggest Mr Obama will have the proposals on his table within weeks.
Democrat congressman Chris Van Hollen says any approach the Obama administration takes must be comprehensive.
"The argument against gun safety provisions is always because it doesn't solve everything we shouldn't do anything and I don't subscribe to that," he said.
"I believe we need a comprehensive approach, we need to look at all the different elements here and just because a particular effort won't prevent something in one particular incident, doesn't mean you shouldn't do anything that might help in other incidents.
"Right now you can be on the terrorist watch list, you can be prevented from boarding an aeroplane, but you can go down the street and buy a semiautomatic assault weapon."
With the new Congress sworn in just days ago, 10 different bills are already on the table dealing with gun laws separate to Mr Obama's working group.
So only certain problems should be used to take away more freedoms, eh?
Obama is certainly the most evil person ever to set foot in our White House. What worries me though is that enough real (parasitic but not fictional or dead) Americans voted for him that the far left’s fraud could push him over the top. America is in incredible trouble. If Obama acts on these silly trial balloons, the only good news is that it will trigger a final conflict between those who support freedom and the far left. I will not be cheering for Obama’s side when that happens.
This man IS working for an entity other than we the people.
We should persue that course. Find out who he is working for, and what the goal really is. I believe it is the total destruction of this Nation as a World power, and making it so costly as to recoup our status that the entity this man is working for would be free to manipulate the World the way they want it.

How does one disregard it? It will be in effect until a higher or different authority repeals or undoes it.
I can still hear the echos of some particularly obnoxious loudmouths here who were telling us that Romney was as bad as Obama. Really? They posted the same graphics and crap over and over and over and over. Well, they got your way. Of course Obama is going to sidestep Congress. The Constitution means nothing to him.
He takes everything else he wants via executive order.

Where is the line drawn between a president MAKING law via Executive Orders, and what an Executive Order is SUPPOSED to be?
Surely what the Leftists have in mind for firearms would have to cross that line.
IMO, The President has been out of Control with Executive Orders, probably since Bill Clinton. Our President isn’t supposed to be an Emperor. I think it’s time for a Constitutional Amendment to bring the Executive Branch down to Earth, if the courts won’t do it!
How about this for a start: don’t register anything with anybody at any time.
Cocaine is not registered for easy tracking. Anyone with a registered weapon will be fined if they don’t meet the deadline.

Steps to locate your guns:
Contact manufacturer and force them to give up lists on who they shipped guns to. (This info is required by law)
Contact retailer and force them to give up lists on who they sold guns to.
Contact owner (you) and threaten them until they comply. This is what other dictators have used.
The loophole for owners is that they can get rid of their property as they see fit. You can put a blowtorch to all your weapons (hypothetically) and no one can say anything about it. “Sorry Mr Confiscator, I destroyed/threw away that weapon two years ago”
I think that all that is needed is if you want to buy a weapon that you should be required to show proof that you attended a firearms safety course.
